International Air Transport Association (IATA) is causing “severe financial strain” for start-up and SME forwarders that could propel them out of business. “We are a small company. For us, these are big sums of money. We could have put this money in development, in opening new stations, or put it in the bank to make interest. Now it’s simply sitting there, doing nothing. It’s a very frustrating situation.” Neutral Air Partner's Christos Spyrou said: “This is a major concern for SME cargo agents, and we’re receiving complaints from numerous members. PIA’s financial and operational demise is a known fact, and enough is being discussed in media on its privatization and other matters. However, not much has been said about its implication on the other airlines and air travel – especially domestic, and about the (lack of) role of the oversized regulator – Civil Aviation Authority. A few months back, when PIA was still running regular operations, there were around on average 18-20 daily domestic flights (to-and-fro) and now the number is reduced to half (or even less, if PIA is excluded) while the domestic tickets prices have doubled in PKR at a time when international oil prices are falling, and PKR is somewhat appreciating against USD. Then there is sporadic cancelation of domestic flights (by PIA and other airlines for ‘operational reasons’ other than fog/smog). The consumers are at a loss, as not only they are paying a higher fare but also have fewer options for travel. One reason for the lower daily domestic flights is curtailed and erratic operations of PIA; but there is more to the story. Logically, if PIA flights are reduced, the private airlines (four in total operating domestically) should increase the flights to take PIA’s share. However, these airlines have also reduced the number of domestic flights. Here’s a brief Newsletter about the supply chain situation in Israel today: **Supply Chain Latest: Israeli Sea Ports and Air Cargo Operations** According to a newsletter by **Bloomberg**, Israel's air cargo and marine gateways for trade are functioning under signs of strains as the country's war against Hamas continues. Ocean shipping rates for goods shipped to Israel from Asia and western Europe actually fell last week from a week earlier along with rates globally, said Judah Levine, the head of research with Freightos, a booking and payments platform for international freight, with an office in Jerusalem. That may change as insurance costs increase and carriers pass along war risk premiums, like Haifa-based container line Zim Integrated Shipping Services announced in recent days. "I would imagine that if the insurance risk premium gets included in the freight rate, then you'd start to see rates increase somewhat, but they don't seem to be spiking," Levine said in an interview on Monday. Israeli ports are dealing with extra security checks and labor shortages. Companies are still taking cargo bookings, though Levine said there "appear to be some indicators of some congestion." MSC, the world's largest container line, said last week that there were increased waiting times for terminals in Ashdod and that there were new restrictions on hazardous freight. On Monday, Maersk said its ocean, rail, road and "limited" air services remained operational. According to a research report last week from S&P Global Market Intelligence, the risk levels at five Israeli ports range from very high to severe, with two - Ashdod and Ashkelon - "very likely" to see the security situation lead to an unscheduled closure on short notice. "Israel's commercial port of Ashdod and the Ashkelon energy port and pipeline terminal in southern Israel are the most vulnerable to rockets launched by Hamas and the Islamic Jihad from Gaza," wrote Kevjn Lim, S&P Global principal analyst for the Middle East and North Africa. Air freight costs are also showing early signs of pressure, as flight schedules for both commercial airlines and cargo carriers face disruptions. According to Freightos data, the cost to fly goods from Frankfurt to Tel Aviv rose to $2.26 a kilogram as of Monday, from $2.12 per kilo on Oct. 6. Shipping in the opposite direction, the increase was sharper - $2.41 from $1.76, an increase of 37%. "For exports, at least, the war's impact on air capacity may be pushing rates up," Levine said. FedEx on Monday said it was reinstating inbound and outbound services, and that pickup and delivery services "will be performed according to local authority instructions, where it is safe and possible." UPS, in a recent customer alert, said it's resuming daily international service to and from Tel Aviv, though pickup and delivery in the southern areas of the country were suspended until further notice.
