For each strategy and government policy, funding is crucial, but more so linking funding to policy and community is siale's focus. How development actors partner with communities needs to shift, and NGOs and PIANGO have a key role to fill. “It’s to make sure that we are in there and make those development ecosystems, all of it, have a sense that it is accountable to people.” Check out Executive Director of the Pacific Islands Association of Non-Government Organisations, Emeline Siale Ilolahia (Siale),'s, thoughts on 2023, the year ahead and where development is heading in our leaders series. https://lnkd.in/gUVvEqj7

🌊Following a 2-year collaborative journey involving stakeholders, Task Force members, Partners and Focal Points of the Nairobi Convention, the Regional Ocean Governance Strategy (ROGS) support team led an informal wrap-up and celebration event. 🌊The virtual event underscored the deeply participatory nature of the process and expressed gratitude for the unwavering commitment of the task force members. Key highlights included an examination of the draft regional #oceangovernance strategy and an outline of the next crucial steps as both the Task Force and Support team gear up to prepare the strategy for discussion at the eleventh Nairobi Convention Conference of Parties #NCCOP11 in August 2024. 🌊Throughout the strategy drafting process, technical dialogues and information sessions have ensured that the content and mechanisms of the ROGS resonate with stakeholders' expectations, fostering trust and setting the stage for productive collaboration. 🌊These sessions proved to be enlightening, both individually and collectively. Indigenous governance systems core to self-determination, nation building and sustainability I really appreciated the opportunity to participate in today's Indigenous Governance Forum hosted by the Governance Institute of Australia. It is such important learning, especially for mainstream organisations like Victoria Legal Aid trying to be real about being led by and working with and for First Peoples. Topics included: - How we frame program design with self-determination, engagement and community led decision-making - How we advance self-determination for young Indigenous people through dedicated community infrastructure driven by community governance practices - How connection and belonging can frame the strategy for a healthy, thriving community - How the knowledge and partnership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is integral to all of Australia’s sustainability plans and actions - management, response, and recovery for current and future disasters. I particularly appreciated hearing from Ebony Allen on Adaptation of effective Indigenous governance across sectors, Bobby Maher on Indigenous Data Rights and Bhiamie Williamson on co-planning and co-management for climate, conservation and natural resource management. Thanks to the Institute and all presenters for your generous, passionate and honest presentations. https://lnkd.in/gxJ-pWdG Louise Glanville zione walker-nthenda Courtney McGann Eila Pourasgheri #IndigenousGovernance #SelfDetermination #DataSovereignty #ACCO #FirstNations #Legal

It's time - well past due - for these conversations: as Gary G. Mar writes in The Globe and Mail, for conversations on effective leadership; wise public policy that addresses the role of science even when public opinion makes that challenging; ... and also, definitely, about #forests, #forestry, #wildfire and #landuse. Let's begin this conversation.
The fires in Jasper should hold a lessen to decision makers about public policy, effective leadership and the role of science when there is controversy, writes Gary G. Mar. https://lnkd.in/gnM7zSZG
Opinion: Jasper fires show public policy shouldn’t be solely driven by public sentiment

Despite the escalating climate and nature emergency, the UK's leadership on these critical global issues has waned in recent years. The vital connection between people, especially the poorest communities, and nature is well-documented – as is the importance of locally-led initiatives to halt and reverse nature loss. Fauna & Flora, along with other UK-based partners, have key demands for the new UK government regarding international nature commitments, focused on four main areas of action: Global Leadership, Aid & Finance, Reducing Environmental Impact and Leading by Example in the UK. The next five years are crucial for making progress - join us in urging the UK government to step up and lead the charge for a sustainable future for all: https://lnkd.in/eCqGN6RB CATHOLIC AGENCY FOR OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT WWF-UK Conservation International International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) Forest Peoples Programme RSPB Zoological Society of London (ZSL) #SavingNatureTogether #GlobalLeadership #EnvironmentalImpact
