𝙻𝙴𝙾𝙿𝙰𝚁𝙳 𝚁𝙴𝚂𝙴𝙰𝚁𝙲𝙷 𝙽𝙴𝚆𝚂🐆 ~ The movement of leopards away from the area where they were born is known as dispersal. This aspect of leopard ecology is very hard to study and there are still lots to learn about it. A recent collaboration by several partner organisations provided a rare opportunity to investigate dispersal by these secretive cats in a landscape transformed by human activities.   Camera trap data from the Cape Leopard Trust Greater Overberg survey was combined with those from local long-term leopard monitoring in Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy and ad hoc biodiversity surveys in Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA, as well as a systematic survey in De Hoop Nature Reserve by PANTHERA.   The results of this large dataset, spanning six years, provides evidence of male leopard dispersal across the Overberg landscape, and highlights not only the importance of maintaining safe movement corridors for leopards, but also the value of data sharing and collaboration in conservation.   Full paper: https://lnkd.in/d_9TPuNp

Today is International Tiger Day (Panthera tigris), so I thought I'd create a map on ArcGIS Pro depicting Global Tiger Distribution, based on data from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Habitat fragmentation, among other anthropogenic stresses have reduced tiger habitat significantly over the years. On a positive note, there is a lot of work being done on species recovery at the local level, with conservation tech playing an important role. What a great way to end the week 🎉 👏 Australian Research Council Linkage Project Success! Congratulations to Environment Institute's Associate Professor Damien Fordham, Dr Jamie Wood, Associate Professor Jeremy Austin, Dr Liz Reed and Australian Museum's Professor Kristofer M. Helgen on their successful Linkage Project 'Preventing extinctions of threatened mammals with DNA in sediment archives'. The project was awarded $540,500. The project's partner organisations include Bush Heritage Australia, World Wildlife Fund, Australian Museum, Department of Planning and Environment, Australian Wildlife Conservancy. Australia's mammal fauna is among the most distinct in the world. However, since European colonisation, they have suffered severe population declines and extinctions. This project will use ancient DNA and ecological models to reconstruct threatened Australian mammals' historical distribution and habitats. This data will support evidence-based ecological restoration of many of Australia's most endangered species and reinstate their important ecosystem services. When humans and nature meet ... not everything always runs smoothly. Especially not when it comes to wild species that we have forgotten how to deal with. To be observed wherever there are reintroduction projects or species such as wolves, lynx and bears migrate back into former habitats on their own. Rangers are often the first to mediate in the resulting conflicts with the local population and also oversee rewilding projects. Our ranger training in Romania addresses precisely this area of conflict: How do you reconcile the raison d'être of large carnivores with the needs and fears of the people? How can European bison be successfully reintroduced into the wild and what consequences does this have for the ecology? Knowledge on these and other topics is taught by our experienced ranger colleagues from the Romanian Ranger association with whom we are offering this training course in the last week of March. Bison are generalists—thriving in various habitats as long as food is abundant. This adaptability makes them prime candidates for rewilding, but their reintroduction isn’t without challenges. 🦬 While their presence can have positive effects on ecosystems, we also need to be mindful of potential negative impacts. The Arid Zone Monitoring Project is one of Australia’s largest wildlife monitoring endeavours 🐾 It combines Traditional ecological knowledge and tracking skills with scientific analysis. Indigenous Rangers and Traditional Owners from 33 different Indigenous desert groups are involved, along with government agencies, non-government organisations and independent scientists. The project collated data from 44 groups and individuals, comprising almost 15,000 surveys from over 5,300 sites, with close to 49,000 detections of native and introduced species, including threatened and culturally significant species. This data, which members of the project recently published in Wildlife Research, is vital for guiding conservation efforts. "Most importantly," they write in their paper, "we built a large collaboration, and produced informative maps and analyses, while respecting the intellectual property and diverse aspirations of the project partners. With this foundation in place, a national sign-based monitoring program for medium–large desert vertebrates seems achievable..." This groundbreaking research delves into the #criminal #profiling of #wildlife #poisoners and users of #indiscriminate #hunting methods in #Spain. By analyzing incidents with an open penal file and identified suspects, this paper lays the #foundation for further research into the characteristics of these perpetrators. This is a pioneering step towards understanding not just the crimes themselves, but the profiles of those committing them. #Abstract: 'Poison and other indiscriminate means are used illegally for wildlife control worldwide. This pervasive phenomenon can significantly damage ecosystems overall and be particularly harmful to certain species (endangered or otherwise) that are susceptible to poisoned baits. Poisoning (and co-occurring poaching) jeopardizes public administration efforts to reintroduce or support the populations of certain species, while the favored toxic substances used pose a major threat not only to the biodiversity of habitats but also to human health. Both alleged and actual harm to crops and hunting resources are the main driver of illegal vermin and predator control. Previous studies on poisons and other nonselective methods of wildlife elimination have focused on the means used and the species affected. We have instead taken a global empirical approach, also analyzing contextual aspects, what motivates perpetrators and, eventually, the characteristics of the poisoners and users of various indiscriminate means for illegal wildlife control in Spain. This analysis is derived from a thorough examination of incidents based on the investigation of perpetrator by police and judicial records. Furthermore, this work provides a methodological framework that serves as first approach to this issue, gaining insight into the formulation of preventive policies and improving decision taking by law enforcement agencies.' Why are they blocking the 405? ChatGPT The idea of a herd of elephants on Interstate 405 is quite whimsical and can inspire various creative narratives! Perhaps they could be on a symbolic journey towards a sanctuary or a habitat where they hope to find peace and a safe environment. They might be headed to a coastal area for a refreshing drink or a bath in the ocean. As for why they are blocking the 405, it could be seen as a dramatic way to draw attention to issues like wildlife conservation or the impact of urban sprawl on natural habitats.
