Swacchta Divas: 2nd October, 2024 shall be celebrated as Swacchta Divas. Lot of good work has been done in this direction. Led by government, this is one mission which has seen participation from Corporates, Civic bodies, NGOs, Film fraternity, social organisations among others. In my opinion, this mission should change mindset of every Indian with the following pledges: 1. I will not litter nor allow others to litter in my presence. 2. Neither will I spit on roads and public places nor allow others to do the same. 3. I will carry dog poop picker on roads and encourage others to do the same. 4. I will not allow Gutka lovers spitting on road and public places. 5. I will separate wet and dry garbage and encourage others to do the same. 6. Will keep the beaches clean and encourage others to do so. 7. I will avoid use of Plastic bags which are not eco-friendly. 8. Will spend a day in a month on cleanliness drive and education. 9. Keep our rivers and water bodies clean. 10. However, beyond all the above, keep our mind and thoughts clean, pure and serene to achieve real potential of Swacchta Abhiyan.

This is something we all must follow as educated and responsible citizens of India Every year on 15th August, we celebrate our Independence Day with enthusiasm and a deeper connection with our nation, but we still forget to acknowledge the land and the living beings that get affected by intolerant practices of our decoration and aesthetics. Indeed, Independence Day is special for us, but do we celebrate it in a manner that does not harm the environment? Every year we see that tricolour air balloons and various are used and then disposed of the next day. These then simply end up in landfills and oceans that affect the terrestrial as well as the aquatic animals, consequently hampering the ecosystem. Don't you think it's time to contemplate our practices and pledge to celebrate this independence day and here onwards in an eco-friendly way, where use of sustainable and reusable materials would be made use of to protect the environment and the living beings that form the foundation of our Bharat Mata. Earlier this week, the world’s largest democracy celebrated its 75th Republic Day, commemorating its journey to overcome imperial greed and cultural genocide and its continuous efforts to rejuvenate a civilisation that has uplifted humanity for many millennia. While the day’s events are known for their magnificence, Republic Day is an ode to countless individuals from unique cultures and traditions who have worked together, achieving incredible feats and enhancing India’s greatness. One such group of individuals who personified the true spirit of this sacred land and achieved great triumph are the people of the Chipko movement. The movement originated in 1730 when members of the Bishnoi community sacrificed their lives to conserve trees in their villages. Led by Shrimati Amrita Devi, the protestors embraced the trees unshakeably, believing that “a chopped head is better than a felled tree” and inspiring the King of Jodhpur to ban deforestation in Bishnoi villages. Fast forward two and a half centuries, the Chipko movement resurfaced in present-day Uttarakhand, triggered by commercial greed that jeopardised both local villagers and the life-supporting ecosystem. Once again, the values of non-violence and dharma (righteous conduct), integral to Indian identity, triumphed as the authorities cancelled logging permits and a healthier ecological balance persisted.     While this brief post will never do justice to the thousands of great souls that have contributed to the Chipko movement, it is their contribution we must revere, their actions that we must learn from, and their values we must imbibe. As India rejoices and works to build a more sustainable future, may we all learn from such noble communities who represent not only what it means to be a great citizen but also what it means to be human. Only then will we all exist harmoniously within Nature; only then will the world see an India that is truly Bharat. 🤔 What did Modi Ji achieve by building toilets for every house? Before diving into this question, just pause for a moment and reflect on how our ancestors lived with a slave mindset. The simple act of answering nature's call was considered taboo. 😞 We Indians were never taught that it relates to the dignity of our women, that they need to defecate in the open. In villages, amidst farms and jungles, with minimal integration of technology and low population density, women faced shame and troubles for centuries. But here comes a leader who understands their pain and builds toilets for them. 🚽 No international agency may fully comprehend this, as they cannot feel the pain Indian women have endured. But Modi Ji's contribution should never be forgotten by us Indians. In West Bengal, traditional Durga idols for #DurgaPuja are primarily made from clay and bamboo, not Plaster of Paris (PoP). The clay is sourced from the Ganges River, and artisans use age-old techniques to craft the idols. While PoP is popular in other parts of India for its durability and lightweight properties, West Bengal, particularly Kolkata, remains committed to eco-friendly clay idols, balancing tradition with #environmental awareness. #Mumbai can promote the use of shadu clay for Ganesh idols instead of PoP. #Kolkata’s idol-making process preserves traditional craftsmanship, with artisans using natural clay to uphold cultural heritage. Mumbai can similarly revive the art of clay idol-making to ensure both tradition and environmental #sustainability are emphasized during Ganesh Chaturthi. Kolkata's artisans receive support from the government and NGOs to encourage #eco-friendly idol-making. Mumbai could introduce similar programs, offering artisans incentives, training, and subsidies for #sustainable materials to foster a broader shift toward eco-friendly practices.
