In their new Forefront article, Thomas Buchmueller and Rebecca L. Haffajee of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) argue that, while providing affordable, accessible care to all Americans is a chief goal, narrowing gaps in who can access and benefit from this care is imperative. "The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) today published a set of four issue briefs examining trends in coverage and access to care among these four populations, extending a recent literature that includes prior ASPE issue briefs and articles published in Health Affairs and other journals. In this article, we synthesize the new briefs’ findings and discuss recent and planned Administration actions aimed at further reducing disparities and improving health equity going forward." The report identified concrete, practice and policy-level actions that primary care stakeholders can pursue to reduce inequities and take steps toward achieving health equity. Partnerships like these help us address persistent health disparities, such as lower life expectancies among people of color, indigenous people, rural communities, and individuals facing socioeconomic challenges.
