Mercia Asset Management PLC launched a share buyback worth £5 million after the disposal of a stake in #VideoGame studio nDreams boosted liquidity to £60m. Mark Payton, the #investment group’s chief executive, commented: "Mercia has never been financially stronger”. “The first six months of FY24 have witnessed record revenues derived predominantly from Mercia's profitable and cash-generative third-party fund management operations. "The group's recent successful exit from its largest direct investment, nDreams, has materially increased Mercia's debt-free liquidity position.” #MerciaAssetManagement reported assets under management of £1.46 billion at the end of the half year to September 2023, an increase of 1.7% with no redemptions. Revenue rose by 23% to £15m (H1 2023: £12.2m), while underlying profits climbed by a third to £2.8m (H1 2023: £2.1m). Arcmont Asset Management, an affiliate of investment manager Nuveen, a TIAA company, has reached the high end of its fundraising target range for its latest European direct lending fund, with the fund attracting €10bn in capital commitments. The biggest private-credit players are attracting large sums for their direct-lending strategies in Europe. Ares Management Corporation, for example, is closing in on a record European direct-lending fund with €20 billion of firepower including leverage, and Hayfin Capital Management LLP is looking to raise more than €8 billion from institutional investors for its fifth fund targeting the region. Anthony Fobel, chief executive of Arcmont, said that there is a growing gap between a small number of large funds and a large number of small ones. “That gap is only going to grow and the reason is quite simple,” Fobel told Bloomberg News in an interview. “You have to raise the money, you have to invest the money, and you need to make sure your portfolios are robust. And all three of those factors play to the advantage of large players.” The top five players in European private debt account for about 35% of all of the capital in the European private debt market, according to Fobel. “I wouldn’t be surprised in a few years time if that’s more like 50%.” Activity is picking up in mergers and acquisitions as buyout funds to look put their pent-up capital to work.
