Around 2.6 billion people in the world do not have access to the internet. This means that they are cut off from many essential services like finance, health care and general connectivity. This goes against the Guiding Principle of Agenda 2030 ‘Leave No One Behind’. Provision of broadband services to people is an absolute necessity for all countries, especially developing and emerging economies where access to the internet is not available to a large number of the population. Digital equity requires every person’s access to digital literacy skills, internet connectivity and internet enabled devices. The successful transition to a better future for all requires governments and the private sector to invest in digital infrastructure and digital literacy programs. The World Economic Forum’s Edison Alliance has an aim to improve the lives of 1 billion people by 2025, through digital inclusion. #digitalequity #LNOB #EdisonAlliance #digitalinclusion

Here is the latest post in my 15 week thought series on the following topic: 15 ways for corporates to leverage digital transformation initiatives to uplift communities [13/15] Internet Connectivity The internet is the medium through which so many people around the world go about their daily lives. It is like a general purpose technology which has become a key resource in how the world operates today. The availability of the internet may be overlooked as a challenge in developed communities with adequate infrastructure and resources as compared to underserved communities. According to the United Nations, almost half of the world’s population does not have access to the internet. This creates several societal problems which are premised on socio-economic challenges for underserved communities. Education, trading, healthcare and many other basic needs in daily living happen through the internet. The digital divide is the indicator of marginalised members of society who have been excluded from the internet through mostly socio-economic inequalities and disparities. The daunting reality about the digital divide is an increasingly unequal and divided society as underserved communities are left out of the development and growth which is experienced by developed communities. This does not bode well for a cohesive society and will mostly likely cause regression in the prosperity of communities. These are some of the ways for corporates to participate in uplifting communities through the facilitation of internet connectivity: 🌍 Broadband Infrastructure: Corporates are able to leverage their wide range of stakeholder networks and resources to bridge the digital divide by investing in broadband infrastructure. Reliable high-speed internet access is the foundation for the growth and development of communities. This would enable various growth factors such as access to education, jobs and access to financial support. 🛰️ Satellite Connectivity: Partnering with satellite-based internet solution providers, to serve remote or challenging terrains where traditional broadband infrastructure deployment is difficult would help to provide access to underserved communities in rural remote areas. Satellite connectivity is a great alternative for including isolated communities in connectivity networks and can be a conduit for reduced charges where affordability is a challenge. This concludes 13/15 on 15 ways for corporates to leverage digital transformation initiatives to uplift communities. Look out for 14/15 next week. #InternetConnectivity #CommunityEmpowerment #DigitalTransformation
