In Boulder County, the promise of public education as the great equalizer is challenged by the stark realities of school funding, economic disparity and educational inequities. Here at Impact on Education we know that providing equitable educational opportunities is more than a mission — it’s a necessity. And members of our community play a crucial role in providing students across Boulder Valley School District access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. This is an excellent piece, and fits right along with what I just posted about the Snedden/Dewey divide. This part is especially haunting: "This May marks the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling that school segregation is unconstitutional. De facto school segregation has nonetheless persisted, with the Economic Policy Institute reporting in 2020 that Black students are more than twice as likely to attend high-poverty schools as their white peers and that 60% of Black students are concentrated in high-poverty schools predominantly serving children of color. Many of these students are relegated to deeply underfunded “apartheid schools,” attended almost exclusively by low-income students of color. Battling the consequences of state fiscal abandonment like dilapidated school buildings, unsafe drinking water, and a revolving door of underprepared teachers, these schools have to work twice as hard to provide students with a quality educational experience—one that is rich in critical thinking, collaborative project-based learning, and opportunities for autonomously student-driven work. This “deeper learning” historically reserved for “elite” students is now in demand across the knowledge-intensive job market and postsecondary educational spaces awaiting students upon graduation. High-poverty schools with elevated teacher attrition struggle to provide these crucial skills, leaving graduates scrambling to catch up to compete with their peers. This failure is both a national problem and a signal that our civil rights work is not yet done." #education #equity #cathedralthinking
Though inequality persists between and within schools, Dr. Kia DH and Linda Darling-Hammond discuss key features of thriving schools that support each and every student: safe and healthy communities, well-resourced systems, safe and inclusive schools, high-quality teaching, and high-quality curriculum. Learn more about their guidelines on the Learning Policy Institute blog: https://lnkd.in/gcJjY6W3 We must provide the necessary supports for the next generation of leaders to set our nation up for success. Each student deserves to attend a school in which they can thrive.

Today, the Biden Administration is calling on states, cities and towns, and schools to cultivate a “culture of attendance” and send a clear message that students need to be in school. 🏫 At this morning's Every Day Counts Summit at the White House, the Director of the Domestic Policy Council of the United States, Neera Tanden, referenced the new Digital Backpack 🎒 created by the National Partnership for Student Success Hub; a set of “Resources to Address Chronic Absenteeism in Your Community,” that includes a curated set of publicly available resources, including a selection of Examples In Action (spotlights with information on how districts have worked to address chronic absence in their communities). One of these spotlights is the successful relationship between our AmeriCorps Promise Fellows and Minneapolis Public Schools (utilizing the Check & Connect: A Comprehensive Student Engagement Intervention model!) Check it out (pun intended 🤣)! ServeMinnesota Office of Governor Tim Walz & Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan https://lnkd.in/e4W_pha4

#publiceducation #uspolitics #election2024 Teach Your Children Well Why Tim Walz is the perfect antidote to Project 2025 Dan Rather and Team Steady "If you are a seasoned reader of Steady, you know how I feel about public education. I believe it is a civil right and a great equalizer. I also feel strongly that teachers are some of the most important public servants in our society. Preserving a robust public school system is vital to the well-being of our citizens and the health of our democracy. To see two products of public education as the Democratic nominees for president and vice president of the United States does my heart good. Vice President Kamala Harris attended public schools in Oakland, California, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz not only attended public schools through graduate school but also taught in Minnesota public schools for decades. Theirs is the ultimate American dream — and validation that our education system can work. It is a system that is far from perfect, but please understand there’s a plan being promoted by the MAGA right that will gut it dramatically, minimizing the federal government’s role in education."

Education Advocate dedicated to enhancing individuals while contributing to a more just and equitable community
What is touted as Educational Freedom is in fact blatant defunding of public education. Quality public schools were at one time in our state's history the highest priority. I challenge community leaders to begin standing up for our schools and public school educators #schools #educators #publiceducation https://lnkd.in/gyf5RzTJ

How we'll get to integration and education equity: We've worked with fellow education justice advocates to craft a thoughtful strategy for ushering in an era where every student has a fair and equal shot at quality education. Our approach combines state policy changes, comprehensive research, and proactive advocacy. Why does this matter? History shows us that these tools are incredibly effective. For instance, 12 years of court-ordered desegregation dramatically narrowed the Black/white education gap - until the late 80s when rapid desegregation followed the court's loosened oversight. Transforming our schools into reflections of the diversity of our country is necessary for a healthy democracy. We are fighting for schools that are not only diverse but also rich in resources and opportunities, where every student can thrive. Dive into our roadmap linked below, and stay tuned for our detailed research and state policy agendas soon! https://lnkd.in/g9vt3EQz

Yes, the politics around public charter schools have become more challenging, especially in the blue-hued cities where most of the media lives and works. But across vast expanses of urban and semi-urban America, and especially in Black and brown communities where charter schools have proven most popular and effective, there’s still plenty of room to grow, and few policy barriers standing in the way.

This article from the 74 and Cami Anderson, former Superintendent of Newark Public Schools, is an amazing read. It caused me to reflect deeply on my experience as a charter school principal. There are many things that I wish I had done better in that role and yet also many things that I am proud of from my time in that role. Ultimately, our schools are central in driving our nation forward. Successful schools lead to successful students and successful economies. 1moThank you for this. I was the Program Officer for the Foundation for Boulder Valley Schools in the 2000s, before the name change. I was proud of what we did then and grateful that you are doing so much more! 😌
