How can impact investing be more inclusive and how can charitable foundations be part of that journey through the way they invest their endowments? We recently worked with The Social Investment Consultancy (TSIC) as part of our endowments with impact programme to learn: 1. how we can incorporate DEI into our endowments with impact programme and other work programmes across the organisation; 2. and how we can inspire and support charitable foundations with endowments to put DEI at the heart of their investment processes Read more about what we learnt: https://lnkd.in/ej79yHqW If you want to find out more about this work reach out to Sophia O.. #impactinvesting #endowments #foundations #dei

In 2021, the 300 largest foundations in the UK gave away a record £3.7 billion to charities and individuals in need. That money had a huge impact on the world. But what of the other £87bn of assets that those foundations controlled through their charitable endowments? What impact did those assets have? And more importantly, what impact could they have had? Today, we are launching our newest guide “Evolving your endowment: Driving change through impact investing”, which provides practical guidance for charitable foundations that want to invest the assets in their main endowment with impact. Drawing deeply on existing best practices, case studies, and real-world experience of charitable foundations that have successfully adopted an impact approach, the guide provides practical steps, information and resources on how to do the following: ✅ Laying the groundwork and setting an impact strategy including internal resourcing, creating a theory of change, and different models to transition your portfolio. ✅ Codifying your goals and approach through impact-enabling investment policy statement. ✅ Choosing the right partners to work with and foster productive and trusting relationships with your advisers and managers. ✅ Exploring peer networks, impact organisations and educational resources to help inform, support, and inspire you and your organisation on your impact journey. This unique resource is designed to support and inspire charitable foundations that want to deliver positive change in the world beyond their grant-making. It is part of the Impact Investing Institute’s endowments with impact programme (https://bit.ly/3v5Gv1n), which provides tailored support, practical tools, and guidance to enable charitable foundations and other endowed bodies to invest their endowment for positive social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. Don't we all love an 'untapped' opportunity? If foundations all over the world started to deploy impact investing in their mainstream investment approach, it could unlock billions globally to address the world’s most pressing challenges. Great to see the Impact Investing Institute's guide for foundations wanting to align their investable assets for impact (published with support from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation) - see report below. "Directing just 5% more of the top 300 UK charitable foundations’ investable assets towards pressing social and environmental challenges would represent a £4.35bn increase in capital targeting impact." Some great examples of foundations aligning their investments with their mission also - see link to case studies below.

The best way to drive impact through your Endowment is to supply money to enterprise for its use, for a purpose, for a time, at a cost and on terms through negotiated agreements on equity paybacks to a fiduciary cost of money, plus opportunistic upside, from enterprise cash flows prioritized for suitability, longevity and fairness across all six vectors of enterprise cash flows: fairness to suppliers (Fair Trade); fairness to communities (Fair Engagement); fairness to Nature and Society (Fair Reckoning); fairness to workers (Fair Working); fairness to customers and competitors (Fair Dealing); and fairness to the savers whose savings are the ultimate and original source of the money supplied to enterprise by its financiers, fiduciary or otherwise (Fair Sharing). Deploying philanthropy money through Private Ownership Equity divides your loyalties between your MISSIOn and the selling price for the equity that you own. Deploying philanthropy money through Social Stewardship Equity (as above) unites your MISSION and your MONEY.

What does impact investing look like in practice? The Impact Investing Institute helps answer this with its bank of case studies containing real-life examples of impact investments across asset classes and geographies. We're thrilled to have been involved in the Endowments case study. In the study, our Head of Charities, Carli Baldasare, and Suzannah O'Brien, Managing Director of The Bishop Radford Trust, discuss our process for investing their endowment and how we manage it for impact. This conversational piece is great for those who understand the "why" of impact investing, but aren't quite sure about the "how". Read it in full here: https://lnkd.in/e5di8PDc #impactinvesting #endowments
