Towards agroecological transitions

Development ➡️ revision ➡️ validation ➡️ implementation This is the process that leads to the elaboration of collective plans that guide climate-sensitive agricultural production, landscape restoration, agroforestry activities and income-generating ventures. In Aweil West and Centre Counties (Northern Bahr el Ghazal State), under a project funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, we recently conducted validation workshops to refine such plans for three locations: Maluil Akoong, Longwurkech and Nyikuala. At grassroots and policy levels, these workshops engaged a total of 112 participants, from community members to farmer unions representatives, local chiefs and administrative authorities. 🤝 The goal? To ensure the acceptance and commitment of everyone involved towards planned activities, clarifying roles and responsibilities before moving to the next stage: implementation! #ClimateResilience #SouthSudan

Gender norms are prevalent even in the division of labor for Ethiopian teff farming. These norms influence who decides to adopt a new farming best practice. As a learning partner on the IGNITE project, Laterite and Tanager conducted a study for the Sasakawa Africa Association to understand the gender-specific drivers of household decision-making processes of teff farmers in Ethiopia. #CSHEPKENYA, one of the #AgroecologyInitiative partners in Kenya, celebrated #WorldFoodDay with an event that conveyed several key messages to inspire the adoption of agroecological practices at the grassroots level: Agroecology represents a return to traditional farming approaches that operate in harmony with ecological processes and thereby enhance ecological integrity. Agroecology reflects a profound respect for oneself and the resources that surround us. Addressing global water security challenges relies on the collective impact of small-scale actions taken by local stakeholders. And the most important one: Agroecology can help to prevent, address and overcome the negative impact of unsustainable farming practices on our water resources, and make a meaningful contribution to save our food and planet. Last week our colleagues Eelko Bronkhorst and Reinier Bernaert visited the RWACOF Coffee Research Center in Karenge, Rwanda. The research center, opened in 2022, provides farm inputs and training to smallholder farmers on financial literacy and good agricultural practices. More recently the research center has also focused on addressing the impact of climate change on smallholder coffee production and conducting cutting-edge research on pest and disease mitigation, soil fertility improvement, agroforestry, intercropping and yield improvement from aging coffee trees.    Currently, Rwanda coffee farmers produce about 1kg of cherry per tree per year, which is significantly lower than most other coffee-producing countries. Most commonly available methods used for yield improvement and climate adaptation are not yet catered to smallholders with tiny plots and low incomes. The RWACOF research center uses approaches that are needs-based and are easily implementable and affordable for farmers. RWACOF's research and field testing helps to boost yields, allowing farmers to generate more income and improve their livelihoods without needing more land. It also helps farmers to improve their creditworthiness, allowing them to gain access to the financing they require to invest in their farms, with technical support from partners Financial Access and our digital credit services platform LendXS. #smallholderfinance #agroforestryfinance #sustainablefinance #agroforestry #ruralfinance #financialaccess.

In #Ukraine, iMMAP Inc. is committed to creating new information management products to help partners accurately identify needs and gaps in #humanitarian assistance. Following a field visit to the #Poltava region for agricultural needs assessment, our team developed a seasonal calendar. It shows patterns and trends in farmers' work throughout the year🗓️, with a keen focus on the production and harvesting stages of prevalent crops🌾. These tools will facilitate humanitarian organizations in providing timely and targeted aid that aligns with the actual needs of farmers🚜. To collect data from farmers, our team utilized the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method, which actively involves local communities in data collection📝, analysis📊, and decision-making 👍.
