Movement Director, Melinda Tankard Reist, is quoted in recent School News Australia article 'Digital literacy and cyber safety' “Children are having their developing s*xual templates warped by the toxic education provided by p*rnography exposure,” Tankard Reist said. “We are seeing a rise of child-on-child s*xual abuse, s*xual harassment, children making s*xual groaning and moaning noises, girls threatened with r*pe if they don’t send nudes, and other p*rn-inspired behaviours in schools.” 'Tankard Reist said girls are reporting more s*xual harassment, touching, s*xual moaning, r*pe threats, demands for n*des and unsolicited d*ck pics. Many girls do not feel safe at school. These observations are supported by the AIFS, which reports that in the absence of other reliable information, p*rnography can become young people’s main source for s*x education.' With the rise of technology, this household phrase has taken on new meaning and has drastically shifted. Why should we care about the behaviour of high school kids? Because in 5-10 years those school kids will find themselves in the workplace, making decisions, bringing their thoughts, contributing to teams and embracing the culture. So, when we hear that another list has made it online, should we be concerned? According to this report on Mum Central, lists have been posted on social media that ranks girls in categories including abduction material, and unrapeable. The teenagers responsible for this public cyber bullying, harassment, humiliation, and degradation reflects on their characters. I am curious to know if the beliefs and attitudes that underlie and prompt these behaviours are something that will change significantly with age? What are the challenges of grown up versions of these teens on your teams?

Here's why: 24/7 Accessibility: With the widespread availability of smartphones, tablets, and computers, children can access the internet and social media platforms around the clock. This constant connectivity increases their exposure to potential cyberbullying incidents, which can occur at any time of day or night. Anonymity and Disinhibition: The anonymity afforded by online platforms can embolden bullies to engage in cyberbullying behaviour they might not exhibit in face-to-face interactions. Without the constraints of physical presence, individuals may feel more empowered to harass, intimidate, or humiliate others online. Widespread Reach: Cyberbullying can reach a much broader audience than traditional forms of bullying. Hurtful messages, embarrassing photos, or rumors can spread rapidly across social media platforms, reaching a large number of individuals within seconds. This amplifies the impact of cyberbullying and makes it more difficult for victims to escape the harassment. Persistent Nature: Unlike offline bullying, which may be limited to specific times and locations, cyberbullying can have a persistent and enduring impact. Hurtful messages, images, or videos posted online can remain accessible indefinitely, causing ongoing distress and trauma for victims. Difficulty in Detection and Prevention: Cyberbullying can be challenging to detect and address, especially when perpetrators use anonymous accounts or pseudonyms to conceal their identity. Parents, teachers, and caregivers may struggle to identify signs of cyberbullying in children, making it difficult to intervene and provide support. Psychological and Emotional Impact: Cyberbullying can have serious psychological and emotional consequences for children, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and even suicidal ideation. The relentless nature of cyberbullying, coupled with the public and permanent nature of online content, can exacerbate the trauma experienced by victims. Legal and Ethical Considerations: Cyberbullying may also have legal implications, as it can constitute harassment, defamation, or violation of privacy laws. Schools, law enforcement agencies, and internet service providers may be required to take action to address cyberbullying incidents and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. Given these challenges, parents, educators, policymakers, and technology companies need to work together to address cyberbullying effectively. This includes promoting digital literacy and responsible online behaviour, implementing robust anti-bullying policies and laws, providing support and resources for victims, and fostering a culture of empathy, kindness, and respect both online and offline.

#cybercrime is pervading our lives in so many ways, threatening our privacy, security, and even our teenagers' safety online. It's time to educate ourselves and take proactive steps to protect our digital lives. #Cybersecurity training should be made mandatory as a part of computer education in schools. And I'll even go to the extent of saying that there should be compulsory webinars for parents. The dream of #DigitalIndia can come true only when digital safety is prioritized.

Ah. The kids today. Little character assassins them! Today’s #dailysignal looks at the organised, orchestrated relational attacks a group pu grade 8’s & 9’s in the USA carried out against their teachers, by crafting fake social profiles in their teachers’ names and using them to spread homophobic, racist and sexually explicit content. Nothing new about bullying. Nor about cyber bullying. But something about the inter generational and very public online nature of this campaign is quite chilling. What kind of kids are we raising? What kind of behaviour are they modelling? No social media didn’t make them do it - but it made it bigger and more public and forced us to look at our false fetishisation of youth = virtue and our role as the adults in the (chat)room.
