It's a special day of joy and reflection, honoring African American freedom and heritage. In the tourism and hospitality industry, recognizing Juneteenth is about embracing and encouraging diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). It means making sure all visitors and employees feel respected and valued, no matter their background. Celebrating Juneteenth can also make travel more interesting and meaningful by highlighting important historical sites, supporting Black businesses and stories from African American history. February is Black History Month! From Patrimoine canadien -- Canadian Heritage: "Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities. The 2023 theme for Black History Month is: “Ours to tell”. This theme represents both an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and a commitment to learning more about the stories Black communities in Canada have to tell about their histories, successes, sacrifices and triumphs. No matter where you live, we invite all Canadians to learn more about these communities, and how they continue to help shape Canadian history." https://lnkd.in/gnRaXTJ

Tourism Coordinator at City of Maple Ridge | Transformational Leadership Enthusiast | Creative | Organizational Development Expert
What was your most significant discovery or experience in the Black History Month? Mine was the emphasis of beauty and strength in diversity, highlighting the importance of practicing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). DEI begins with acknowledging the particularity of individuals within a team, organization, or society. It involves enabling fair and equal opportunities as well as establishing policies, developing culture, and creating an atmosphere that encourages individual and collective success. DEI are crucial for effective leadership and organizational success because through the practice, team members achieve their highest potential, finding purpose and fulfillment while at it. As the Black History Month comes to an end, the practice of DEI should not. Leaders must continue to lead by example, demonstrating accountability, active listening, and showing a genuine willingness to embrace, accommodate, and support diverse individuals as we collectively pursue our goals. Organizations must also continue to find ways to improve processes and encourage frameworks that promote DEI, knowing that it is an effective way to maximize workforce talent, encourage creativity, improve service, and achieve set financial goals.

In this last week of Black History Month, understanding both historical and cultural context matters in healthcare and in our personal lives. How we show up is as important as who we show up for! Click on this post to learn more and show up with renewed understanding and commitment!
Jonae Harrison highlights how cultural competency is so important in serving our population as a community health center. Community health centers are vital to Black History Month, as they play a crucial role in addressing historical healthcare disparities and promoting equitable access to quality care for all including African American communities. We strive to provide affordable and accessible healthcare services, actively work to reduce health disparities, and serve as advocates for preventive care and health education. In honoring Black History Month, supporting community health centers becomes a meaningful contribution to building a healthier and more inclusive future for all.
