Consultant specialising in supporting system-wide reform and improvement including strategic planning, curriculum and assessment development, professional learning, blended pedagogy and stakeholder engagement.
With the move to online assessments, it is inevitable that AI will be integrated eventually into more comprehensive test and assessment design. There are a number of potential applications and benefits for teachers and students. The big BUT is to do with readiness, accessibility, capability and capacity – of systems/providers, schools, teachers, students. For example, at a basic level, with online writing assessments some students lack keyboarding skills impacting their potential to achieve; teachers need targeted professional learning and support; and many school communities still do not have broadband access let alone access to digital tools and resources.

I prompted an AI to write some essays based on selected prompts from past ESS examinations. My students then used the scoring rubric to assess the AI’s output. Here’s what we found: - The AI consistently reached the middle and upper bands of the rubric but rarely the top levels. - The writing was very formulaic, keeping a nearly identical format regardless of context. - Examples provided by the AI were factually correct, but they were overly broad and lacked sufficient detail (this is one of the reasons it couldn’t reach the top levels). We then discussed as a class how to improve upon the AI’s writing. This helped students picture both average writing and what it takes to create the quality and depth of high-achieving structured essays on the ESS exams.
Over the past few months we have seen more and more teachers reaching out for strategies for building AI literacy. To help out, we have developed a new resource focused on critically analyzing and evaluating GenAI outputs. Our goal with this resource is to empower both educators and students to think critically about AI outputs and reinforce the importance of human oversight when using these tools. These activities are designed to be versatile - they can be used with students in the classroom, or by teachers individually or in professional development sessions. This is how we would approach implementing these activities: - For students: They can be conducted as standalone activities or integrated into existing curricula to teach critical thinking, writing, and subject-specific skills for any content area while building AI literacy. - For teachers: We know that teachers are concerned about academic integrity and may be turning to unreliable AI detection tools. So these activities provide teachers an opportunity to evaluate outputs and start to see why our teacher intuition is often not enough to spot AI generated work. For additional help, we've also added a new AI-Guided Critical Analysis Prompt to our Prompt Library. Check out the comments below for links to both resources including a downloadable PDF, and let us know what you think! And if you have tried similar activities, let us know in the comments. Been grappling with the challenge of authentic student work in a world of artificial intelligence lately. In prior episodes, I've talked about the implications of leveraging AI detectors and steps educators can take to create an environment of authentic student work. These solutions are grounded in asking ourselves "why do students cheat?" 😴 The assignment is boring 😫 The assignment is challenging and they don't understand it 🏋♀️ Other priorities are more important 🤖 AI work is better than their own 😴 They are interested in the subject 🔍 They are not clear on acceptable AI use 🤐 They don't like or trust their teacher How might educators respond? ✏ Redefine students relationship with writing 🎙 Go multimodal in assignment option 🧠 Go meta - treat every assignment as open book + push critical thinking 🤖 Respond to AI use...w/ AI use (not detectors) 👯 Team projects 😍 Align every assignment to personal passions and interests After exploring Jeff Wetzler's new book, "Ask" - I realize educators have a powerful opportunity to take this further. Why not ASK your students what would motivate them to cheat? How could we solve some of the problems behind these motivations? What would it look like to make our classroom a place where students were excited to come everyday? I can imagine how scary it might be to open this box up with students, yet a powerful learning experience may be awaiting. Holding space for students to co-design their learning may also alleviate an educators stress behind not knowing what students think and create a moment for them to practice conversations which will prepare them for the world beyond high school. Lean in. Educators, how does this land for you? #artificialintelligence #schools #education #ai #technology

🤖📝 AI in the Classroom: Can Teachers Really Tell the Difference? Big news for educators and tech enthusiasts alike! 🎓💻 A startling new study from German universities reveals a challenging truth: teachers, both novice and experienced, often can't tell the difference between AI-generated and student-written texts. Here’s what went down: The first round of studies tested pre-service teachers who could only correctly identify 45.1% of AI-generated submissions. 🚫✍️ Not to be outdone, experienced teachers scored even lower, with just 37.8% accuracy. 😲 The kicker? Teachers were actually overconfident in their ability to spot AI-written texts. Plus, current AI detection tools frequently mislabel genuine student work as AI-generated. 🤔🔍 🔍 Why This Matters: As AI's writing prowess continues to evolve, simple intuition or current tech tools may not cut it. Instead of fighting a losing battle by penalizing AI usage, maybe it’s time we teach students to harness this powerful tool effectively. 🚀📚 ✨ Whether you're in education, tech, or just plain curious about AI's expanding role in our lives, this development is a game-changer. Stay informed, stay adaptable, and consider the potential of embracing AI in educational settings. The future is here, and it's written by AI! #AI #Education #Technology #Innovation

AI Enhances Teacher Productivity: New Research Insights A recent study by Samantha Keppler and Clare Snyder from the University of Michigan sheds light on how AI can help teachers feel more productive and effective in the classroom. The study followed 24 K-12 teachers during the 2023-2024 school year, focusing on how they used generative AI tools like ChatGPT. Teachers who used AI not only to create materials but also to seek advice and develop new teaching strategies reported significantly higher productivity. These teachers found AI helpful in generating fresh ideas for lesson plans and alternative approaches when traditional methods didn’t work. This led to improved student engagement and learning outcomes. While many view AI as a time-saving tool for tasks like generating quizzes or worksheets, the study revealed that its real value lies in providing creative teaching solutions. Teachers using AI for strategic advice felt they were achieving more in terms of improving student learning, not just completing tasks faster. However, the research also highlights a key challenge: not all teachers know how to effectively use AI. For many, the time spent getting useful results from AI can be as long as creating the materials manually. The study suggests that more training and support are needed to help teachers maximize the potential of AI. This research emphasizes that AI, when integrated thoughtfully, can help teachers be more creative, productive, and effective in advancing student learning. #AIinEducation #TeachingWithAI #EdTech #TeacherProductivity #GenerativeAI #InnovationInEducation Posted by: Hari Sunil Subburayan

Looking forward to my CUE Presentation on Thursday. Inspired by last year's sessions on AI, I will share my research and practice on how student led inquiry allows students to build the media literacy skills needed to live in an AI world and to be adaptable for whatever is next on the technology horizon. Session: An Inquiry-Based Approach to Empowering Students in an AI World Date and time: 3/21/24 1:45 PM - 2:35 PM Location: Renaissance - Pasadena "There is no turning back the clock on AI in the world or our classrooms. As we discuss the dangers and benefits of AI, how do we teach students how to live and work with AI ethically and creatively? How can we teach / mitigate biases in AI and system of information classification? While we may try strategies such as returning to pen and paper or AI-proofing assignments, in this session we will look at how inquiry learning approaches and information literacy instructional frameworks, including the Model School Library Standards and Guided Inquiry Process, can engage and empower students to reduce the pitfalls of AI through AI literacy, learning ethical and strategic use of AI as a tool to deepen research practices." #ai #medialiteracy #InfoLit #informationliteracy #education #libraries #librarians

AI Education Strategist | Keynote Speaker | PENN GSE | Morehouse | I equip schools with AI to make education future-proof.
The latest EdWeek Research Center survey reveals a telling stat: 54% of teachers are seeking PD on detecting improper AI use by students. While it's encouraging that educators are recognizing the need for AI-related development, this figure speaks to a deeper, more pressing issue in our educational approach. This statistic is rooted in fear—fear of cheating, yes, but more significantly, fear of bypassing genuine learning. It leads us to question: Is our current educational system genuinely teaching students to think and learn, or merely to complete tasks for grades? Case in point: Last year, a middle school English teacher contacted me, suspecting a student of using AI for an essay. I was able to provide evidence of AI use this time because the student entered the exact question as the prompt and submitted the first response. But the real question emerged: What if we used this as a teachable moment instead? What if we taught students to use AI as a tool to enhance their originality, rather than penalize them for innovative thinking and valuing their time? Imagine a 7th grade history class where students aren't just memorizing dates but are analyzing current global conflicts and proposing UN-level solutions. That's the kind of innovative thinking and real-world problem-solving skills we should be instilling in our students. The focus on AI detection is a short-term fix to a long-term challenge. It's time we shift the dialogue from mere detection to how we can structure education to be 'AI-proof.' How do we foster an environment where AI complements rather than replaces critical thinking and creativity? It's not just about integrating AI into the classroom; it's about revolutionizing how we assess understanding and engagement. If we continue to view AI merely as a hurdle to overcome, we risk being left behind in an increasingly AI-integrated world. We need to think bigger. As educators, our impact is measured in decades, not days. We owe it to our students to prepare them for a future where AI is a fundamental part of the landscape, not just a tool to detect and deter. Let’s transform our fear into curiosity and our classrooms into incubators of innovation. It's time to embrace AI, not as a threat, but as an opportunity to redefine education for the better. #AIinEducation #FutureReady #InnovativeTeaching #EdTech
