** Fashion’s New Sustainability Rules for 2024 ** Long report… however what perhaps nails it as an Exec summary for SELF REGULATION, this is what ‘success’ looks like… Quoting directly from this article: “Waste management: Less than 1 percent of fashion textiles are recycled and a truckload of products are sent to landfill or incinerated somewhere in the world every second.” It will be interesting to see if these new regulations are fit for purpose. For the record, I’m an advocate for a ‘waste tax’ to tackle overconsumption and accelerate investment into more sustainable infrastructure. As well as clear up the waste already polluting the planet. #sustainable #fashion #sustainabilitymatters

Interesting article reflecting on the 2024 priorities in sustainability in fashion. All seems urgent and important! 🤪 The big takeaway for me is a more specific regulatory landscape and hopefully a more unified perspective at EU level and not at single country level.

Empowering youth-led startups, social enterprises, and social champions with mentorship, investment, and strategic guidance.
EU is leading the way in sustainability fashion regulations, as self regulation is phased out. Exporters from Pakistan should see the impact of this in their supply chains today. "Product design: Up to 80 percent of a product’s environmental impact is determined in the design phase and is baked into materials and dyes. The EU’s flagship Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), set to come into full effect by 2025, sets minimum design standards for all individual products sold within the EU. This includes requirements around recyclability, durability, reusability, repairability and use of hazardous substances. Digital product passports that collect and share this information with consumers are expected to become required by law." #fastfashion #sustainability #circularity #circularfashion #wastemanagement #landfills #esgreporting #greenwashing #emissionreduction

🔔 How will the new Californian legislation affect fashion brands? Under California’s Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2024 (SB 707), brands will be responsible for establishing and funding recycling programmes to manage old clothes. According to the office of state Senator Josh Newman, who introduced the California bill, roughly 1.2 million tonnes of textiles were discarded in California in 2021. Yet, only 15% returned to the market despite most items being reusable or recyclable. Just like the EU’s ESPR policy, this new law puts the onus back onto brands to be more sustainable rather than on consumers and is a first for the US. Here’s what fashion brands looking to future-proof their businesses can do: 👉 Get serious about transparency Digital IDs allow brands to exercise transparency and digitally connect the dots between their products. Transparency is crucial for recycling products as it provides sorters and recyclers with the necessary information to get the job done. 👉 Connect customers to end-of-life solutions Digital IDs also keep brands connected to their customers post-sale. Brands can easily share access to repair, recycling and other end-of-life solutions to fit each product. This deeper connection strengthens the relationship between products and their owners, reducing a throwaway culture. 👉 Develop circular products Real circularity starts with circular design. As a platform, Vestis Labs helps brands manage their product collections and development process in a simple, practical, and accessible way that empowers them to make informed, sustainable choices. For brands looking to navigate increasing legislation, Vestis Labs is an all-in-one fashion management platform that keeps you ahead of the curve. Our integrated Digital IDs are automatically generated to help brands prepare for legislation with enhanced transparency every step of the way - from development and design to end-of-life solutions. We are more than just a technology company; we are a movement that seeks to bring thoughtful adjustments to the fashion industry from within. Get in touch to learn more. I was recently featured in an ELLE Magazine article by Angela Tafoya-Bailey about common terms and standardizations in sustainable fashion. This is something we’ve been working on creating resources around at Beaker. “Transparency is huge. People are more intentional about where they put their dollars and are aware of greenwashing tactics. If it’s hidden in the depths of the website, that’s not transparent.” “Words like ‘green’ or ‘eco-friendly’ are not regulated. It’s important to look at certifications because they have a standardization. You have to meet a certain mark. So, when reviewing a product that touts itself as ‘organic’ or ‘sustainable,’ you should see this claim accompanied by the third-party verification. All certifications should have a tag that includes the certification body name and reference code.” What did you learn about sustainable fashion terminology? Are there any other terms to include? #Earth #Sustainability #sustianable #sustainablefashin #fashion #greenwashing #organic #standard #ecofriendly #green #standard #certfication. #earthday #green #slowfashion #ecofriendly
