As leaders, our words and actions shape the culture and safety of our organisations. Leader behavioural integrity for safety, the alignment between what we say and what we do, is critical for incident reporting. Research has shown that when managers "walk the talk" and conversely when they "talk the walk", in terms of safety compliance, workers perceive their leader's commitment to safety as being more authentic and they will be more likely to report issues. Leaders who demonstrate higher levels of leader behavioural integrity create clear boundaries. When they fail to align their behaviour with the safety values they advocate, it leads to ambiguity for workers regarding their leader's prioritisation of safety and accordingly reporting levels will drop.
