Boundaries~ It was perfect. The chickens had their glorious little area and we had our beautiful yard. Then, the idea struck. We learned of letting the chickens free-range in the evenings once hawks were away. Initially-as in Day 1- it was beautiful. They were so grateful to be free (or again, for the older hens). Alas, within three days, it all went to hell: the scream beginning around 3, they ran where they a weren't supposed to run. Let's remember, these are chickens..not trained dogs. What was I thinking? ⚡️While it is very important to be willing to try new ideas, you have to be just as ready to go back to what works. With the falling temperatures, it’s time to prepare for cold weather conditions. In some climates the temperatures can go as low as -35 degrees celsius. To prepare you for these circumstances, we’ve made a checklist of five vital elements of chick handling and transport during winter. 1. Create a plan of action and plan your chick transport carefully. 2. Prepare your chick carrier by preheating the cargo space. 3. Check the conditions such as wind, temperature and the environment before loading the chicks and plan ahead. 4. Keep doors closed as long as possible an load/unload quickly for minimal temperature loss. 5. Monitor the behavior of the chicks and recognize symptoms which can be helpful to make sure your chicks have the right body temperature.
