🌟 Recap of Last Thursday's Seminars at Center for Risk and Reliability 🌟 Last Thursday, the Center for Risk and Reliability hosted two captivating seminars that delved into the fascinating world of nuclear technology and its applications. Here's a brief summary of the enlightening discussions: Seminar 1 was about the Mark-18A Target Material Recovery Program: Presented by Ken Czerwinski, a distinguished professor in the radiochemistry program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, shed light on the Mark-18A targets deployed and irradiated at the Savannah River Site from the 1960s to the 1980s. These targets played a pivotal role in producing essential isotopes like 244Pu, 246-248Cm, and 252Cf. The initiation of the Mark-18A Target Material Recovery Program in 2015 aims to safeguard and exploit these targets to meet current national needs. Professor Czerwinski outlined the plan for material recovery, discussing nuclear reactions, radiochemistry, and the anticipated development of infrastructure and skill sets crucial for successful material recovery operations. This program not only underscores strategic resource utilization facilitated by the US Department of Energy but also provides opportunities for university involvement in advancing radiochemistry and training future scientists. Seminar 2 was about Career Opportunities in Nuclear Technology: Presented by Steven Mirsky, a seasoned nuclear-mechanical engineer with over 48 years of industry experience, provided invaluable insights into the wide range of career opportunities available in nuclear technology. From engineering and science to information technology, the nuclear industry offers diverse employment prospects with significant contributions to key social and environmental issues. Mr. Mirsky elaborated on specific nuclear employment titles, compensation, nuclear electric power technology, safety considerations, and human health benefits. His presentation aimed to provide students with factual information and context to assess their potential interest in pursuing a career in nuclear energy, emphasizing the technical attractiveness and meaningful impact of such career paths. Both seminars were not only informative but also inspiring, highlighting the importance of ongoing research, collaboration, and education in advancing nuclear technology and addressing global challenges. A big thank you to our speakers for sharing their expertise and insights! #NuclearTechnology #CareerDevelopment #Education #CenterForRiskAndReliability #SeminarRecap #Reliability #UMDReliabilityEngineering #UMDEngineering

We are pleased to share that the first PALLAS publication has been published in the Nuclear Engineering and Design Journal. Joint effort of the NRG|PALLAS colleagues from Deterministic Safety Analysis team, Fulvio Bertocchi, Izak De Kock and Cristian Vega, brings light on how to adequately estimate Critical Heat Flux (CHF) phenomena. Predicting CHF remains challenging due to the complexity of the involved physics. The research done on how to predict the occurrence of Critical Heat Flux in the narrow rectangular fuel channels of the PALLAS-reactor is a successful outcome of the Deterministic Safety Analysis. The licensing process of the PALLAS-reactor mandates that its response to Postulated Initiating Events be assessed as part of the Deterministic Safety Analysis to prove that the reactor can be safely brought to a safe condition during all postulated accident conditions. The publication is an important milestone for the PALLAS-reactor Deterministic Safety Analysis towards the licensing of the PALLAS-reactor. Additionally, the publication also further share knowledge with technical and scientific community. You can freely access the publication until 26 February 2024 at: https://lnkd.in/gm-Q-fr6

With advanced nuclear fuel designs on the way – that could use novel fuels for reactors -- we are hard at work preparing our technical staff to be #AdvancedReactorReady. Staff members recently trained at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on our light-water reactor core physics codes and neutronics safety analysis methodology. Or to put it simply, our staff looked at computational tools that evaluate how the chain reaction in a reactor core responds under various conditions. Output generated from these codes plays an important role in ensuring nuclear reactor safety by supporting our technical reviews and confirmatory analyses. In this case, the codes show us how advanced fuel designs behave under different conditions.
