Had a conversation with a newer sales associate today who is starting a career as a recruiter but wasn’t sure how to initiate or control a cold call lead. The first thing I thought of was the classic open eneded questions method. We all learned it, and we are also all guilty of forgetting it’s there in the tool box at times. Looking at a cold call through new eyes renewed my passion for psychology and how to work open ended questions into a script while making it sound natural. This is what we came up with “Hi, I was calling hoping to speak to (name of client)” - end this greeting with a slight inflection on the end. Just enough to sound like a questioning but not confusing. It also pre vets the client by giving them the chance to answer with “that’s me, whose calling?” or the response you want to hope for is the client repeating their name by saying something like “this is (their name) because people subconsciously love to hear their name repeated by themselves as much as others. The other choice for response is a more violent or rude “who is this?!” or a hesitant “yeah” with a questionable undertone that lets you know this client has a backstory as unpleasant as their personality. The important thing is you now know how to proceed tone wise by making a statement instead of asking a yes/no question. Once they answer respond with “This is (your name) from ABC company how are you doing today?” - again, answering yes or no doesn’t make sense here and will get the client talking. If they say “good, and you?” answer with “it’s going well, and I’m hoping I can make it an even better day for you. You replied to a job add on our board previously so I wanted to call and see if you are still looking for work and if so are you still in the same city and state as when you applied previously?” Once again, yes or no doesn’t make sense here so a choice has to be made. I love the game of keep them talking by not allowing for yes or no to be a response. It can be a very useful tool in lobbying as well. #legalizeit #legalizenc #ncpol #cannabiscommunity
