This new report from our research partner RTI International introduces the first Child Welfare Workforce study, which was carried out as part of the third cohort of the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW III). The NSCAW III Child Welfare Workforce Study sought to better understand four topic areas relevant to the child welfare system (CWS) context: workforce characteristics and competencies; recruitment, hiring, and onboarding; training and professional development; and organizational factors. The study’s timing allowed for the inclusion of research questions about the policy and practice impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. https://buff.ly/3XeH054 #Data #ChildWelfare #Workforce

Welfare dependency is a complex issue that involves balancing providing a safety net for the less fortunate while fostering a cycle of dependency that undermines individual initiative and economic vitality. The philosophical foundation of this discussion is rooted in justice as fairness, but the integrity of the welfare state depends on the reciprocity of its beneficiaries. The economic perspective of welfare is a double-edged sword, creating perverse incentives that discourage work and enterprise. The psychological dimension of welfare dependency is equally critical, as prolonged dependency erodes self-esteem and the sense of agency, leading to learned helplessness and depression. In Australia, particularly the Northern Territory, the social and economic costs of welfare dependency are palpable. The welfare system has been criticised for creating a culture of dependency, particularly in remote Indigenous communities with high unemployment rates and limited educational and economic opportunities. Addressing welfare dependency requires a nuanced approach, including economic policies focusing on employment and entrepreneurship, psychologically reinforcing the dignity of work and personal responsibility through conditional welfare, and security-focused initiatives addressing crime and social disorder. The challenge for policymakers and society is to roll back a welfare system that doesn't provide a safety net for the needy but encourages dependency. This requires a nuanced understanding of the incentives and behaviours that welfare policies engender and a commitment to creating opportunities for members of society to achieve their potential. #economics #security #dependency #psychology #welfare #helplessness #interventionism
