It is essential to recognize the progress that black women have made in breaking barriers, but it is equally important to acknowledge that there is still work to be done towards achieving true equity in the workplace. While advancements have been made, it is crucial to address the systemic inequalities that continue to persist and ensure that diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) are prioritized and embraced.

As I reflect on the concept of equity versus equality, it strikes me how deeply personal this distinction is to me. Equity, for me, is more than just a notion of fairness; it's about recognising and honouring the unique needs of each individual. In my line of work in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and counselling Murdoch University, I've come to appreciate the importance of this perspective. Every day, I try to approach my work with a multicultural, intersectional and social justice lens. In my counselling work, I frequently encounter clients facing similar challenges; however, my approach and methods vary significantly as I conscientiously consider the multifaceted layers of their identity, life experiences and the intersections of privilege and otherness. It's about advocating for fairness and justice, not just for some, but for all. Equity isn't about leveling the playing field in a one-size-fits-all manner. It's about acknowledging that the playing field isn't the same for everyone and working to ensure that everyone has what they need to thrive. In any domain, each of us has the potential to contribute to equity and inclusion. It simply requires us to pause and consider how we can effectively integrate it into our capacities. Great video featuring Ammara Moeen and explaining this concept.

Equality and equity are often used interchangeably, but they represent distinct concepts, especially in the context of social justice and fairness. ➡️ Equality focuses on sameness, while equity focuses on fairness and justice. ➡️ Equity acknowledges and addresses the fact that not everyone starts from the same place. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for creating systems and policies that foster true fairness and inclusivity. #EquityVsEquality #SocialJustice

Equality and equity are two important ideas that help us understand how to make things fair for everyone. Here's one way that helps me think about the difference between equity and equality: Equality is fairness through uniformity, and equity is fairness through a recognition of individual needs.
