Last year, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS reverted to its earlier policy on registering child sites before using 340B drugs at those locations. That process can take up to nearly two years to complete. "Distrust, then verify”—quote by a family member feeling dismissed & mistreated by their care partners. ➡️ A missed diagnosis. ➡️ Deferred blame. ➡️ Specialist after Specialist. I do what I can to support them as they rebuild trust with their team. ✅ I attend medical appointments. ✅ We request longer appointments when needed. ✅ An extra chair is placed in the exam room so I can take notes, ask questions, and ask for clarification if needed. ✅ I review providers' notes in the medical record. ✅ If the family has a question about a treatment, I find the notes & evidence and then compare the decision to current treatment guidelines. If needed, I'll draft memos (reviewed by the client before sending) requesting clarification or risk-to-benefit analysis. While I wish they had received the appropriate quality care they deserved from the beginning, being part of their healthcare family is an honor, and I do what I can to reestablish trust so they can find peace. Patients hear the distrust and resentment clinicians hold and voice toward their regulatory bodies. We can often see the validity of that distrust, while being affected by it. If AHPRA is a perceived or real threat to clinicians, reporting and recourse begins to feel unsafe for patients. We all have different standpoints in this. From a patient perspective, I am most concerned about how this distrust throughout regulation and safeguarding impacts the patients. Erosion of trust between clinicians and regulatory bodies, such as AHPRA, is a matter of patient safety when principles of accountability become coupled with associations of unnecessary and frivolous threats. I want to emphasise that I am not dismissing the real, complex, and often negative experiences clinicians have with their regulatory bodies. I am passionate about patient safety and want to amplify how much this erosion of trust flows through to the culture of silencing, and compounds villainisation of patient whistleblowers. No matter how broken a regulatory system is, we cannot in any way foster environments which discourage patient advocacy and our right to use the complaint mechanism available to us. Bring patient voices into this conversation.
