Last week at the UN General Assembly, I had the privilege of joining the Leadership Summit by the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, in collaboration with UN Women, the United Nations Global Compact, and the Belgium Mission To The UN. We explored how our industry is advancing gender equality, and it was an honor to share my perspective. It’s disheartening that in 2024, we must still advocate for the importance of gender equality. The urgency for action is clear—declarations are not enough. We need concrete steps and measurable progress, as emphasized by the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, co-founded by Kering and led by Marie-Claire Daveu. At Gucci, we are committed to leading meaningful change across the luxury industry and our supply chain. Being part of this initiative reflects our dedication to building a sustainable and equitable future. To make real progress, men must actively contribute, and women must have equal representation at all levels. The recently adopted UN Pact for the Future underscores gender equality as essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Together with industry leaders, we identified actions to accelerate this progress. “The default is to think women are included, but they have minimal rights, pay, and protection.” - Lombe Mwambwa, Global Observatory for Gender Equality and Institute of Sport Science, University of Lausanne The adidas Breaking Barriers Project recently published “Beyond Representation: Exploring Comprehensive Gender-Inclusive Approaches to Elevate Women in Professional Sports”, a study exploring how sports organizations can implement gender-inclusive policies that go beyond representation to create genuinely inclusive environments for women. Research shows one element of sports very clearly: Representation is not the same as inclusion. True inclusion means addressing the deeper, systemic barriers that still hold women back—from unequal pay to limited leadership roles. And many agree real change happens from the top down. When more women are included in leadership roles, they can influence decision-making and help break down the barriers that persist in the industry. So, how can we ensure that women not only participate but lead? 🔍 Over the past two years, listed companies in Belgium have made significant strides in promoting gender equality in the boardroom. Some are even ahead of schedule, already meeting the 2026 objectives of the European Union’s new Women on Boards directive.
