This report released today is the tip of the iceberg of why I'm so happy to be working with QSIDE! They're creating vital research and data analysis, and there's so much more to come.
We’re excited to announce that QSIDE and the The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (HAVI) have partnered on a report titled “News Media Coverage of Gun Violence: A systematic review” (Chad Topaz, PhD & Jude Higdon, EdD, authors). The study examined dozens of recent research publications focusing on media representations of gun violence and found that media focus disproportionately on mass shootings over the more prevalent challenges of community-based gun violence and suicide by gun. In the face of daily news of gun violence and a shocking attempt to assassinate former President Trump, it is reasonable to feel despair and even hopelessness. We recognize how natural that reaction is, but also encourage everyone to move through the despair and continue to work together to protect our communities from gun violence. It is possible. We know what works. Together, we can make our communities safer and end this epidemic. We will continue to post and repost examples of violence prevention policies and programs that work. #EndGunViolence

Nope. The people who say “we can’t arrest our way out of this crime problem” are LYING to you. No type of physical violence can ever be addressed by policy, research or investment. Case in point… The failed war on drugs is proof of that. The failed border policy is proof of that. The failure to stop human trafficking is proof of that. ALL of the above have been the BIG and MAJOR targets of policy, research and investment… for years - To what effect? Only the FAILURE of those policies, that research and all that investment. Wasted time, energy and money. Violence, criminal acts of violence, committed by criminals, people using illegally acquired guns, THAT violence CAN be addressed by the strict and aggressive enforcement of the law, all of the laws, already on the books… all the way to jaywalking and spitting on the sidewalk. And require mandatory minimum sentencing that ensures those criminals, people, that do actually get caught committing crimes, especially with guns, stay in prison for a significantly long time. That and only that will prevent them, the criminals, from getting released, reoffending and victimizing more people. THAT, and only that, is what will ensure the long term public safety. Focus on keeping those people who victimize others behind bars after they’re caught. Arrest and keep the criminals that do get arrested in custody and the criminals committing crimes with guns problem WILL vaporize like ice on a sunny sidewalk.
