As we mark Disability Pride Month, it's crucial to reflect on the significance of this celebration and its impact on fostering a more inclusive society. Disability Pride Month is not just a time for recognition but also an opportunity to amplify the voices of individuals with disabilities, celebrate their achievements, and advocate for their rights. This involves pushing for inclusive policies, ensuring accessibility in all areas of life, and promoting a culture of respect and dignity for all. #DisabilityPride#InclusionMatters #Accessibility #DisabilityAdvocacy #EquityForAll#InclusiveWorkpla #DisabilityRights#DiversityAndInclusion #InclusiveEducation#DisabilityAwareness#BreakingBarriers#DisabilityInclusion #Empowerment#RepresentationMatters #AdvocateForChange

National Disability Independence Day occurs every year on July 26, commemorating the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which protects people with disabilities from discrimination of all kinds. In the disability community, able-bodied people are referred to as “temporarily able-bodied” as a reminder that a disability can occur to anyone and anytime– especially later on in life. GLP Attorneys is proud to support clients with disabilities and advocate for their rights. On National Disability Independence Day, we encourage you to learn more about ADA and how you can break stigmas and barriers within your community. Thank you to Edmund Asiedu ♿️ 🚲 for sharing this important message. Both "special needs" and "handicapped" have been used for years to label and separate individuals with disabilities. These terms, though different in wording, share a similar effect: they reinforce the idea that people with disabilities require something "extra" or "different" from the rest of society, furthering the divide rather than promoting inclusion. Inspired by Haben Girma (I hope she doesn’t mind me echoing her words in: “The euphemism Handicapped, after many years of service, has filed for retirement.” This sentiment applies equally to the term "special needs," which has also overstayed its welcome, especially here in Alberta. It’s about time we stop using these terms, which only serve to otherize and marginalize. Whether it's AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped), handicapped parking spots, or special education programs labelled as such, the language we use shapes perceptions. By retiring these outdated terms, we can begin to create a more inclusive and equitable society here in Alberta, where all individuals are seen for their abilities rather than defined by their differences. #DisabilityInclusion #StopUsingSpecial #Inclusion #Accessibility #Diversity #Equity Credit to Edmund Asiedu and Haben Girma for the original post.

Well-said fellow disability justice advocate, Haben Girma. It is about time we stop using “Special” as prefix for names of programs and services geared towards making programs, projects, or services inclusive of individuals with disabilities. #DisabilityInclusion #StopUsingSpecial #Disability #Inclusion #Accessibility #Diversity #Equity Image Description: “The euphemism Special Needs, after many years of service, has filed for retirement.” - Haben Girma

Today, we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Disability Pride Month! Signed into law on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities—both visible and non-visible—such as requiring employers to provide accommodations for individuals with disabilities and ensuring that buildings and public transportation are accessible. Our goal is to provide an inclusive and accessible space for our patients, visitors, and team members and advocate for equal opportunities for all. Join us as we celebrate and recognize achievements in this area while continuing to work toward bridging the gap in disability inclusion. #ADA #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct #ADAanniversary #ADA34 #DisabilityPrideMonth #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay #inclusivity #accessibility
