Can we start letting healthcare professionals create policy to help people? These statistics will only get worse, as more physicians leave states where they aren’t allowed to practice evidence based medicine. “The CDC’s report, published Wednesday, also noted larger increases for two of the leading causes of infant deaths — maternal complications and bacterial meningitis.” “More than 30 states saw at least slight rises in infant mortality rates in 2022, but four states had statistically significant increases — Georgia, Iowa, Missouri and Texas.” #womenhealth #infantmortality #maternalmortality #patientsafety #obgyn #doctor #healthcare https://lnkd.in/gB6h5thf

Statistics like these in the U.S. coupled with deliberate killing of children overseas with our tax dollars, when pediatricians have become a target of death threats from anti-vaxx, and it being among the lowest paid fields …has made being a pediatrician harder than ever before. I had made the error of believing that caring about children & saving child lives was a universally held belief. Unfortunately, it is not. These deaths are preventable…if only we cared enough. Typically hard work should yield results. This worsening mortality rate for American children is a direct result of policy and budget choices by our nation’s “leaders” and by all of us who vote to put such leaders in place. We are all responsible. In a country where you can vote and where you can call up your elected officials - public servants who work for you - what are *you* doing to change this?

The manuscript "International Consensus Criteria for Pediatric Sepsis and Septic Shock" was presented at the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 - hosted by the Society of Critical Care Medicine - and is now published in JAMA It defines globally applicable new criteria for #pediatricsepsis and #septicshock, answering the question of how children with suspected infection at higher risk of mortality, indicative of #sepsis, should be identified. Sepsis remains a #globalhealthcrisis, with at least 47 million cases and at least 11 million deaths each year - one death every 2.8 seconds. It disproportionately affects children in poor areas - more than 40% of all cases occur in children under the age of 5. Luregn Schlapbach, the main author of the manuscript, was previously a member of the Board of the Global Sepsis Alliance and serves on the Steering Committee of the European Sepsis Alliance #globalhealthcrisis #sepsis #pediatricsepsis #septicshock https://lnkd.in/eMWTsuRb

28 June was International Neonatal Screening Day. Rare Voices Australia's (RVA) Chief Executive Officer, Nicole Millis, was interviewed by WIN News on the importance of newborn bloodspot screening (NBS). NBS is an important program that supports the earliest possible diagnosis of some rare diseases and enables the best immediate treatment and care. 🚼 Australian babies have been screened using #NBS since the 1960s and while there is more work to do, several promising developments have been progressed in recent times, including the Australian Government’s investment of $25 million in the 2024-25 Federal Budget to support the continued delivery of NBS expansion and consistency of conditions. For the first time in 60 years, Australia has an agreed national list of NBS conditions and there is specific #funding to achieve consistency across the country, cementing Australia as a world leader in NBS. RVA will continue working with all Australian governments to assist with NBS expansion. https://lnkd.in/gmfRn5J3
