Climate change activism and clinician advocacy are increasingly connected, as the connection between climate change and health becomes more evident. Clinicians play a crucial role in this process, and their activism bridges the gap between environmental justice and health equity, recognizing that a healthier planet leads to healthier people. Their unique frontline position, knowledge and connections with patients on one side and healthcare institutions on the other, position them as the right advocates for climate action. By advocating for sustainable practices and raising awareness of the health consequences of environmental challenges, clinicians can leverage their expertise to promote both individual and public well-being. I recently read an article by Lara Musser, Tanvi Girotra, Cjloe Meg Vinoya-Chung, and Komal Bajaj, published by IHI and found out that a recent survey by The Commonwealth Fund revealed that 80% of clinicians believe it’s crucial for their hospitals to address climate change, with 60% factoring an employer's environmental policies into their career decisions. The healthcare industry accounts for a staggering 8-10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. The most important takeaway is that healthcare professionals can play a pivotal role in addressing climate change by integrating environmental sustainability into existing quality and safety practices. By applying community organizing principles and performance improvement methods, such as breaking down large goals into smaller, actionable campaigns, clinicians can drive meaningful change. This approach is a clear win for every part of the equation, as it helps decrease the healthcare sector's environmental impact, while is also enhances the quality of care, patient safety, and staff well-being, making climate action both attainable and impactful within health systems. The assembly emphasised the shared responsibility we have in achieving "Health for All."  It was great to amplify this message alongside Frontline Health Workers Coalition and Community Health Impact Coalition. It highlighted the importance of strong health systems with empowered health workers at their core. Public health is increasingly becoming a critical factor in the success and sustainability of businesses across all industries. By focusing on the health and well-being of employees, companies can boost productivity, reduce absenteeism, and lower healthcare costs. A healthy workforce is a productive workforce, and implementing public health initiatives—such as wellness programs, mental health support, and preventive care—can lead to improved job satisfaction, increased employee retention, and better overall performance. For businesses, this means a more engaged and motivated workforce that drives growth and innovation. Moreover, public health principles ensure businesses comply with health regulations, reducing the risk of costly legal penalties or reputational damage. Whether it's navigating occupational health standards or preparing for health-related crises, businesses with a strong public health foundation are better equipped to manage risks. This has been especially evident during global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, where companies with robust public health policies were able to adapt more quickly, ensuring business continuity while protecting both employees and customers. In addition, public health is integral to corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, as businesses are increasingly expected to contribute to the well-being of their communities. By supporting public health initiatives—such as reducing environmental hazards, promoting disease prevention, or improving access to healthcare—companies can enhance their reputation, strengthen relationships with stakeholders, and create a positive impact that goes beyond profit margins. Integrating public health into business strategy is not just an ethical decision but a smart business move. Companies that prioritize public health not only improve their internal operations but also position themselves as leaders in a world where health, sustainability, and well-being are becoming key drivers of long-term success.

The theme for this year's World Health Organization #WorldHealthDay2024 is #MyHealthMyRight. It was chosen to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination. From an occupational standpoint, we know that good work is good for health and good health is good for work. The right to health includes the right of every worker to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. This can only be achieved through policy and business evidence-based strategies to enable people to live healthier and wealthier working lives. Feeling the heat? A study from Centre for Health Economics' Andrew Ireland, David Johnston and Rachel Knott shows the dangerous impact of high temperatures on our work environments - and it isn't just heat stress and sunburn. According to 35 years of data, a day where temperatures reach 33 to 36 °C averages 5.3% more occupational health claims than when the temperature remains between 18 and 21 °C. If current adaptation measures are maintained, a warming of Victoria's climate by 1.5 °C would result in additional health claims costing Victoria an extra AU$40.3 million.
