Director of Research and Innovation | Global Healthcare Leader | 25+ Years in Policy, Research, Quality, and Management | Ph.D. In Health Policy and Management | Transforming Health Systems through Research & Innovation
👍 One of my favourite topics: how best to improve the performance and quality of an entire health system? 👉 Three researchers tried to answer this question: Juan E. Tello, Erica Barbazza, Kerry Waddell 💎 This is a gem of a study and I highly recommend it! It appeared in Health Policy in 2020. 🏥 The review conducted by the researchers supports healthcare professionals understand which quality of care mechanisms will have the greatest influence on the health system and when to use them. 🚦 Here are some of the key findings: 👉 Even though a lot of resources are invested in interventions such as programs, actions, initiatives, policies, strategies, not an awful lot is know about the impact of these interventions. 👉 The researchers ultimately create an excellent catalogue or taxonomy of 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 8️⃣ interventions (yes, one hundred and twenty eight). 👉 The interventions reviewed are divided according to the three main functions of regulation: setting direction, monitoring and enforcement. 👉 Interventions include facility accreditation, disease registries, clinical guidelines, inspection, public reporting of performance, patient reported outcome surveys, etc. 👉 The interventions reviewed are divided according to the three main functions of regulation: setting direction, monitoring and enforcement. 👉 Less than 10 percent of the interventions have a sufficient amount of evidence to support their effectiveness. 😨 Don't despair - this review is very useful in and can be easily used as a starting point for regulatory agencies and quality professionals. And it will hopefully serve as a starting point for further research.

I was delighted to lead our 2024 edition of the @MSD Ireland ‘My Healthcare, My Future’ research series along with Declan Whelan-Curtin. Titled ‘My Healthcare, My Future: Next Gen Health’, the report builds on the work and insights MSD Ireland has been bringing to the fore since the very first iteration of the series back in 2016. The report identifies a range of challenges and opportunities across the Irish population when it comes to health, including a concerning increase in our pessimism when it comes to our health system’s ability to match our future needs. The report also highlights the significant challenge of the cost of healthcare in terms of access and affordability. Additionally, this year, we’ve sharpened our focus into younger generations to gain a better understanding of #GenZ and their perceptions and expectations of health and the healthcare system. In this we’ve uncovered some surprising insights, ranging from the role of social media to perceptions around the importance of physical and mental health. We hope this research will help ensure we’re integrating all voices into the conversation around the future of health, leaving no one behind, no matter their age or background. Our report covers a diverse range of topics and insights which we hope will guide current and future health conversations across the board – I would encourage anyone with an interest to give it a read for some fascinating stats: https://lnkd.in/ehFKCMNZ

On Tuesday 2 July, 14:00–15:00 CEST, we invite you to join our free webinar, where a panel of experts will discuss the policy principles needed to build trust in health systems. Trust in health systems is one of the most valuable resources; it is hard to build, and easy to break. For many people from traditionally under-represented groups, health systems are inequitable. There can be extensive barriers to accessing care and widely different experiences of the health system. As a result, these communities may not trust the health system – and may face poorer outcomes. To create sustainable and equitable health systems that serve the needs of the whole population, leaders must prioritise the four key policy principles identified in our upcoming report ‘Earning trust: a foundation for health equity’: understanding, inclusion, transparent communication, and data generation. The report and webinar are part of the A Million Conversations project. This international initiative by Sanofi aims to build under-represented groups’ trust in health systems. Join us on Tuesday 2 July, 14:00 – 15:00 CEST, to be part of the discussion. Sign up for the webinar below: https://lnkd.in/efjciNUm
