It is with great pride that we share the news that Iberostar Waves Cristina in Mallorca (Spain) has been selected as one of the first three hotels to be part of the IHG Hotels & Resorts Low Carbon Pioneers program which identifies leading energy efficient and low carbon hotels. We believe there is immense potential for the hospitality sector to work together to reduce its environmental impact, with many solutions destination dependent. This program will enable the sharing of best practices and encourage the wider adoption of carbon reduction initiatives. For instance, our Iberostar Waves Cristina Hotel features a number of measures to minimize our impact, including sourcing green certified energy, installing solar panels on the roof, utilizing high-efficiency heat pump heating and cooling, fully electrifying its operations, and maintaining a dedicated team that has ensured we have been free of single-use plastics since 2020, and is working to eliminate waste to landfill by 2025. Through our alliance with IHG Hotels & Resorts, we have established a joint sustainability committee giving us a great opportunity for our teams to explore the topic of sustainability and discuss how we can further our collective vision for a responsible model of tourism. With this carbon-focused initiative we look forward to collaborating with other like-minded companies to achieve the industry’s commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2050. #ResponsibleTourism

As someone who loves to travel and experience the bliss of good hospitality while being mindful and respecting #sustainability, I am inspired by the recent initiatives from IHG Hotels & Resorts in many ways. Here’s why this checks many boxes on my sustainability radar 📖: 🌿 Listening to Customers: More travelers are becoming aware of the environmental impact of their journeys and are opting for eco-friendly travel options. This includes choosing destinations and accommodations that prioritize sustainability. Such initiatives show that the market is being heard! 🌱 Adoption of Sustainable Practices: Prioritizing the reduction of scopes 1 and 2 illustrates the understanding of targeting the "low-hanging fruits," a reasonable and conscious decision to decarbonize operations. Expanding efforts to the challenging #scope3 emissions highlights their commitment and action towards building a sustainable future. 🌳 Focus on Cooperation: On the road to achieving our climate goals, there is no room for competition. Embracing all stakeholders equally will strengthen the community needed to power the dual transformation across industries. While more #hotels are turning to #green #technology for sustainable operations, the industry still has a long way to go. In 2023, the World Travel & Tourism Council reported that 73% of global travelers prefer to stay in hotels that implement sustainable practices. This statistic has been a driving force for hotels to incorporate green technology across their operations. Despite the significant strides made in adopting green technology, the hotel industry still has a considerable way to go in terms of environmental sustainability. The sector continues to contribute significantly to global carbon emissions and waste production. According to a study published in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism in 2023, the global hotel industry is responsible for approximately 1% of the world’s total carbon emissions. https://lnkd.in/gKjwMwQX

Some notable eco hospitality initiatives in Thailand, especially: 'installing 1,006 solar panels with a peak capacity of 653 kilowatts, capable of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 489.93 tons per year' from Rawiwan Poongam at Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach. Chinese solar panels are super cheap now so will we see a solar power revolution across Thailand hotels? And: “We have started calculating how much carbon is used by suppliers when they deliver products and will use this data to find ways to minimize our carbon footprint' from Sutan Piromnarg at ibis Styles Krabi and 'He also keeps track of purchases of key products like rice, vegetables, fruits, dry food, and seafood to see where they were sourced and how many kilometers they traveled to get to the resort' from Kamol Sangiamwong at Veranda Resorts Pattaya. Let's see if the rest of the sector follows suit or gets left in the (low carbon) dust. 🌿🍃💨 Here are our 7 Key Takeaways from IHG’s New ‘Low Carbon’ Hotels Program: ✅ IHG unveiled its new “low carbon pioneers” program, featuring three trailblazing hotels aiming to minimize carbon emissions. They’re not stopping here—this initiative is the first step in a larger journey. ✅ Energy Efficiency Standards The participating hotels must meet stringent energy efficiency standards, utilize renewable energy, and meet several other green requirements. The goal? To cater to the eco-conscious traveler who demands more sustainable options. ✅ Eco-Friendly Tech is Pricey Switching to low-carbon technologies isn’t cheap. IHG acknowledges the high initial costs of green upgrades like heat pumps and the fact that, in some markets, electricity costs far outstrip those of gas. The hotel has nearly eliminated fossil fuel usage, thanks to solar panels, high-efficiency heat pumps, and all-electric kitchens. Even the guest rooms are equipped to minimize energy waste when unoccupied. ✅ Certification Costs and Commercial Viability Staying in IHG’s program requires obtaining certifications like Green Key or LEED, which add to the overall costs. IHG’s chief sustainability officer, Catherine Dolton, stressed the importance of building a broader commercial case to scale these green initiatives. ✅ A Blueprint for the Industry IHG’s move reflects the hospitality industry’s growing pressure to reduce carbon footprints and adapt to sustainable travel trends. This program could serve as a model for other hotel chains, paving the way for more green initiatives in the sector.
