Say you're deciding between two restaurants. One has 4.5 stars on Google, and the other has a 4.5 rating on Uber Eats. Ultimately you decide on the restaurant with 4.5 stars. Why? Are stars more influential than numbers? Join JMR Coeditor Karen Winterich as she talks with Annika Abell, Carter Morgan, and Marisabel Romero about the impact of star ratings relative to numerical ratings. You'll also hear how the researchers navigated the peer review process (including JMR's new Data Transparency Policy), how they worked so effectively together, and their advice for early-career researchers. Beyond Coffee, Book by Dan Engle, James Beshara, and Katherine Haynes, Food & Drink Book, eHardback Book Review "Beyond Coffee" deftly exposes the secret universe that dwells inside our everyday cup of joe. The author transports readers on a thrilling trip that goes beyond the surface-level enjoyment of sipping coffee with rigorous research and an engaging story. The book explores coffee's economic, cultural, and historical facets, tracing its origins to early civilizations and examining its contemporary global influence. The ability of "Beyond Coffee" to deftly combine scientific knowledge with personal narratives, illuminating the nuanced relationships between coffee production, climate change, and social justice, sets it apart from other documentaries. The author's compelling prose illuminates the difficulties that coffee producers face and the pressing need for sustainable practices in a field that is sometimes taken for granted. Readers are treated to a sensory adventure as they turn the pages, from the earthy smells of coffee farms to the busy markets where beans are traded. "Beyond Coffee" serves as a wake-up call by challenging us to think about the bigger picture effects of our morning routine. It awakens in the reader a sense of duty, pushing them to relish not only the flavour of their cup, but also the tales that entwine with each sip. This book serves as a welcome reminder that there's always more to learn underneath the surface in a day of mindless consumption. Healthy, Equitable, and Sustainable Food Systems are an important cog in the human right to food. This is an important aspect that gets overlooked when we view agriculture as a commodity instead of a practice to nourish people and communities.

Connecting people and ideas for better health | Health Consumers' Council WA | The WELL Collaborative | Weight Issues Network
Compare and contrast: this post below outlining the work required to ensure everyone in Australia has access to food. And a post elsewhere about a healthcare professional outlining their financial expectations for their next role in primary care (over $500k/year). I know it's not popular to talk about money and salaries in healthcare. And I know health professionals are highly trained with many having made financial investments in their education. And I know not all health professionals earn vast sums. And if we're serious about improving health we're going to be prepared to discuss how much is invested in "health" and where it's being invested. Ensuring food for all seems like an essential building block for a healthy community.

The latest title from our 'Food Culture, Food History before 1900' book series is out now! Sarah Kernan and Helga Müllneritsch's edited volume, 'Culinary Texts in Context, 1500–1800' represents a new and significant contribution to the study of recipe books from the early modern period. 📖🍲 The authors explore how localised traditions of book production and domestic record-keeping shaped the physical forms of the books, and how stains, folds, marginalia, items pressed between pages, and pasted-in additions reveal their many uses. Highly recommend this book, Ultra Processed People by Dr Chris van Tulleken. Easily digestible (pardon the pun) insight into modern food science, what we are actually eating, the impacts of this on our bodies and how ultra processed food is affecting health and well-being. With so many medical conditions having a modifiable element it's incredibly relevant and interesting stuff #TrainReading #underwriting
