Saudi Arabia, with its vast expanse of land, is characterized by a diverse range of soil types. These different soil formations contribute to the country's unique agricultural and ecological landscapes. One prominent type of soil found in Saudi Arabia is loam soil. This soil is a combination of sand, silt, and clay, providing excellent drainage and moisture retention capabilities. Loam soil is highly suitable for agriculture and is commonly used for cultivating crops across the country. Another common soil type in Saudi Arabia is sandy soil. The desert regions of the country are predominantly covered in this type of soil. Sandy soil is known for its large particles, low nutrient content, and rapid drainage. Although challenging for agriculture due to water retention issues, it is still utilized for specific purposes such as date palm cultivation in oasis areas. In certain areas, clayey soil dominates the landscape. This type of soil composition consists of fine particles with high water retention properties. While clayey soil can present challenges for water drainage, it is well-suited for the growth of certain crops, particularly those that require more moisture, such as rice. There are areas in Saudi Arabia where the soil exhibits salinity, commonly known as saline soil. This type of soil contains a high concentration of salts, making it unsuitable for most crops. However, there are certain plant species that have adapted to this challenging environment and can thrive in saline conditions. #LEAP #SaudiArabia #WorldOrganicGroup #Peatgel #Business

Climate, Sustainability, Social Impact | Harvard MPA; MBA | Board Member & Advisor | Keynote Speaker | On a mission to create an inclusive, healthier world through sustainable food system transformation
🌾 Meet Ahmed, a smallholder wheat farmer in Egypt 🌾 In Egypt, smallholder farmers are the backbone of the country’s wheat production, crucially supporting the beloved baladi bread, a staple in Egyptian households. Yet, did you know that Egypt imports ~12m metric tons of wheat whilst there are 2.5 million feddans dedicated to wheat cultivation? Egyptian wheat smallholders struggle with low productivity due to increasing soil erosion, water scarcity, and salinity intrusion. How can we help? As Erika Balzarelli, founder of The Sustainable Smallholder, I recently met with several of these farmers. One farmer, Ahmed, shared, "We put our heart and soul into this land, but the returns are barely enough to feed our families." One of the ways to uplift these smallholders, is the use of innovative solutions like bio-stimulants: Bio-stimulants enhance plant growth and resilience by improving nutrient uptake and stress tolerance. Some high-quality bio-stimulants can even increase water retention by up to 15%. They help in combating soil erosion and salinity intrusion, leading to healthier crops and increased yields. This sustainable practice not only boosts productivity but also ensures long-term soil health. By empowering smallholder farmers like Ahmed with with these cutting-edge solutions, we can significantly improve their livelihoods and secure the future of sustainable Egyptian wheat farming. #SustainableFarming #SmallholderEmpowerment #BaladiBread #EgyptianAgriculture #TheSustainableSmallholder #regenerativeagriculture #biostimulants #smallholderfarming #foodsystems #foodsystemchange

🚨#WaterCrisisAlert🚨 for #Pakistan 🇵🇰 as a significant water shortage of 30% grips the nation at the onset of sowing season, putting key cash crops such as rice and cotton at risk. With #ClimateChange causing deviation in the average snowfall, the irrigation reservoirs have been impacted greatly, causing concerns for the agricultural sector. Kharif crops, which constitute a bulk of the nation's agricultural output, rely heavily on a wet and warm climate, which has been distressingly scarce this year. Though the monsoon is expected to bring some relief, heightened temperatures add an undeniable uncertainty to the situation. The nation's economy, with the agricultural sector contributing to around 24% of its GDP, could be massively affected by this impending crisis. As per Muhammad Azam Khan, of the IRSA, responsible water management strategies are now paramount to tackle this issue and optimize the utilization of remaining water resources. Join us in shedding light on this scenario and discussing solutions. According to loop author (2023), PNG spends more than K1.2 billion to import 400, 000 tones of rice annually, while the country produces around 4,800 tones. This shows that not much effort has been made to support rice farming on a commercial scale to meet the local demands and also for possible export. since rice has now become the staple food for majority of Papua New Guineans, our Government need to focus more on improving rice production in the country. They, (the government) need to establish Rice Special Economic Zones (RSEZ) in the country and start building up substantial commercial Rice industries. These will not only increase the production of rice in the country but also provide job opportunities, reducing cost, improving food security and many more.....🌾 picture: Breeding of Rice @PNGUNRE Farm, ENBP, PNG.. #AgriculturecantakebackPNG #InAgricultureWeTrust🌾🫡
