In 2024, the launch of the Food Tech Valley in Dubai aims to triple the nation's food production by integrating cutting-edge technologies and fostering research and innovation. This initiative will establish a hub for clean tech-based food and agricultural products, providing a dynamic incubator for researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry experts. Abu Dhabi has also made significant advancements with the unveiling of AeroFarms AgX, the world's largest vertical farm at 65,000 square feet. Along with Dubai's Bustanica vertical farm, these projects underscore the UAE's commitment to sustainable local food production and reducing reliance on imports. These vertical farms are poised to significantly increase the supply of fresh, locally grown produce. The UAE's ambitious goals include boosting the food and agriculture sector's GDP contribution by $10 billion and creating 20,000 jobs within the next five years. These initiatives highlight the nation's dedication to food security and economic growth. Did you know that the #UAE imports 90% of its food? Many countries around the world face a similar situation—they rely on imports of food products and agricultural inputs, which makes them vulnerable to supply chain disruptions (which are becoming ever-more frequent due to extreme weather events and geopolitical conflicts). That's why we are seeing more focus everywhere on revitalizing local agriculture and enhancing national food security strategies. 🤔 But how can this be achieved in a region like the Middle East, which faces climate challenges and limited water and soil resources? And what can we all learn from their experiences that can illuminate future innovation possibilities in our climate-changed world? I invite you to watch a short video from my visit to Emirates Bio Farm EBF, the UAE's largest organic farm, during the Food Innovation Hub convening by the World Economic Forum earlier this year. It was inspiring to witness Yazen Al Kodmani's visionary work. He is not only addressing the need for local food production but also going further by spearheading efforts to achieve this through #regenerativeagriculture. His use of innovative technologies and traditional agronomic practices demonstrates how we can effectively enhance soil fertility and biodiversity and ensure long-term productivity and environmental sustainability even in the harshest conditions. Quite literally, he is turning sand into soil—AMAZING! 🤩 EBF serves as a model for what is possible across various agricultural production systems, from livestock to aquaculture to vegetable crops. They integrate principles of circularity at every step - always experimenting with and refining their methods, and sharing their successes and learning with the world!
