Just kickstarted my internship, and we’re already onto one of our biggest events at Closing the Loop! Please follow the Vodafone Germany campaign to find out more about our work and the impact it has on driving forwards a more circular economy, particularly in the context of e-waste management in Ghana, one of our main operating countries. Drawing from my academic background in Industrial Ecology, I believe in the reduction of consumption as the first course of action for sustainability. However, we cannot ignore the fact that consumption of electronics is rising, and so is the amount of e-waste – at an alarming rate. A significant portion of this waste is illegally exported out of Europe into developing countries in Africa like Ghana where there is no proper infrastructure to deal with this sheer amount of waste. Closing the Loop is one of the few pioneering companies to export e-waste out of Africa and, step by step, helps balance the score with its “One for One” initiative, in which for every new phone purchased, a fee is levied to help recycle scrap phones across the African continent. #closingtheloop #oneforone #vodafone #industrialecology

With over 1.4 Billion phones sold annually and a recycling percentage of only around 15%, you can imagine that as a result the amount of electronic waste is huge (over 50 Mio tons per year). Using your phone for as long as possible is the first step and therefor it is great to see OEM's providing longer software support. But in the end a phone will always become 'End Of Life' and despite all the recycling and refurbishment activities across different countries , too many devices end up as landfill in countries like Ghana. I have just attended my 25th MWC Barcelona by GSMA, where over 100K+ #Tech passionates walked through having at least 1 or 2 languages in common to communicate easily. Lucky folks ! But this is far from being a norm… On earth, over 40% of the world population, 4 Billions people, are mono-lingual. This is just the reality.
