Investing in nature represents a key mechanism through which organizations can combine financial and sustainability imperatives. By directing capital towards projects that mitigate climate change, enhance biodiversity, promote socio-economic well-being, and recognize local communities' knowledge and integral role, organizations can help catalyze a shift towards a more sustainable world. However, how organizations invest in the right projects and ensure integration with their wider climate strategies is not straightforward.   That’s why I’m delighted to share the launch of the ‘Natural Climate Solutions for the Voluntary Carbon Market’ today as part of our #LCAW2024 program. A collective effort of our ERM Sustainability Institute, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance, and the Forest Investor Club, this important guide, designed for companies and financial institutions, illustrates not only the potential of NCS but also the critical role that private sector investment plays in unlocking this potential.   NCS projects are complex and require highly technical due diligence. However, if well-designed and managed, NCS can be a valuable addition to a natural capital investment strategy. Yes, Natural Climate Solutions, at least those at the scale we need, are complex and require high-quality projects, financial structuring, serious and in deep market/business opportunities analysis and structuring, and independant, international, third party suppervision. All of this -risk reduction measures- have a cost. The problem is that nobody wants to bear that cost. Project owners do not have the resources -they are already looking for resources-, and investors are reluctant to consider this pre-investment stage as part of the business opportunity. So, everybody is asking for high quality but nobody wants to pay for it. We need to redefine the boundaries where value can come from.
