The UAE’s Murban Crude has seen record-breaking trading activity, announced Intercontinental Exchange, in the second quarter of 2024. ICE Futures Abu Dhabi #IFAD, the platform where Murban futures are traded, saw an unprecedented surge in trading volumes, underscoring the growing importance and demand for the UAE’s flagship crude grade. During the second quarter of 2024, the Murban futures market witnessed a record trading volume of over 1.5 million contracts, equivalent to 1.5 billion barrels of Murban crude. Rethinking a well-known concept of the Gold/Oil ratio by introducing a ratio based on the volatility of these commodities. This ratio is derived from two VIX subindices: the Gold ETF Volatility Index (GVZ) and the Crude Oil ETF Volatility Index (OVX). The chart below indicates that the volatility of oil has consistently been higher than that of gold, except for a period between 2013-2014. In 2015, the world entered an era of “relatively low ratio”, suggesting that the prices of crude oil became much more unstable compared to gold. The recent gold rush has indeed caused the ratio to rise, and even though it remains relatively close to the mean, such a strong upward trend may be worrisome. #macrobond #gold #oil #volatility
