An interesting new Medicare pilot program that’s beginning to look at the essential role of caregiving in successful home healthcare models. Here’s the rub for me though… These programs rely upon family caregivers - for elders and people with disabilities. Absent a family caregiver, the patient doesn’t qualify. We need programs that are patient centered - designed to uphold the civil rights of people with disabilities or seniors who wish to remain in their homes. If the govt will pay an able bodied family caregiver, or offer respite, why won’t comparable services be provided to the disabled/elder person? In the absence of a family caregiver, comparable services might mean that a patient can hire a caregiver - with the govt subsidizing the cost. Note that this is relevant in cases of family dysfunction and where there isn’t a caregiver.
