6 years ago, I met Amanda, and her journey profoundly changed my perspective on caregiving. Amanda knows the tumultuous path of Alzheimer's and dementia all too well. Her mother’s diagnosis at just 56-years-old, thrust Amanda into the demanding role of full-time caregiver. She faced everything from behavioral changes and logistical hurdles to the heart-wrenching anticipatory grief. Amanda handled every aspect of her mother's daily care, from dressing and bathing to helping with meals. All while balancing a job and raising kids. She had been caring for her mom with dementia for over 5 years and decided to download ianacare. She shared with us: “it gave people the opportunity to love my mom and love our family in a way I wasn’t letting them without asking for help.” Initially, she thought it wasn’t going to work for her. That’s because MOST caregivers don’t ask for help. Caregiving is still an insular experience and people don’t share this part of their lives. But caregiving is an inevitable part of life. This is why Steven Lee and I are so bullish on creating practical tools to mobilize the people and resources every family needs. It's also why we're tripling down on supporting dementia caregivers through the new CMS GUIDE program.
