#InternshipStories Taya Rozenshteyn, Class of 2025, completed an internship at Luohan Academy (part of Alibaba Group). Below is her sharing of her internship experience. Q: Could you share how you secured this internship opportunity? Taya: Initially, I came across the advertisement for the Luohan Academy internship through the Career Newsletter, which Career Services publishes every Monday afternoon. I applied for the position by submitting my resume and a tailored cover letter matching the job requirements. Then I was invited for a telephone interview. During the interview, the focus was on my interest in the position and the potential value I could add to Luohan Academy. Ultimately, I was delighted to be offered the internship. Q: What does a typical day in your internship look like? Taya: My daily internship routine starts at 10AM from booting up my computer to commence the day's tasks. I regularly update my boss on my progress throughout the workday. My lunch break begins shortly after noon. A notable perk is Alibaba's vast array of dining choices, turning each lunch hour into a gastronomic pleasure. After lunch, my work continues until I finish up at 6PM. Q: What challenges did you encounter during your internship, and how did you tackle them? Taya: As an international student interning in China, the primary obstacle I encountered was the language barrier. With limited Chinese language skills, I found that most communication within the company was conducted in Chinese. To navigate this challenge, I adopted a proactive stance, actively engaging in conversations with colleagues and striving to maintain a sense of ease during exchanges. Furthermore, in situations where I had trouble understanding or when specific professional terminology was required, I would seek assistance from English-speaking colleagues. This approach was essential to ensure comprehensive understanding and the ability to perform my duties effectively.
