*Design with nature: Healthcare buildings* Why shouldn’t healthcare buildings be pleasant places to visit, positively integrated into communities, even loved? Imagine if typical clinical buildings were uplifting, positive, homely environments flooded with natural light and connected to gardens and greenery. Connecting with nature promotes healing because it provides a form of effortless stimulation appreciated via all the senses. The simple act of sitting in contemplation in a courtyard garden presents you with an array of subtly changing colours, textures, lights, sounds and scents. As well as creating gardens and outdoor rooms, architects can bring nature into healthcare settings by using natural materials, such as timber. The wood creates a warm, tactile effect that can be appreciated with multiple senses. The building itself can become an instrument for healing. This is an ethos we developed during our work for Maggie's Newcastle, and carried into our designs for a new centre for mental healthcare excellence at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, opened last year… https://lnkd.in/dsFUBTGJ #healthcaredesign #designwithnature #hospitaldesign #hospitalarchitecture #healthcare #wellbeing #mentalhealth #childrenshospital #timberdesign

“Buildings are not just walls and roofs; they are health-critical environments where we spend 90% of our lives,” Dr. Richard Carmona, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States. September 26, 2023 Renowned leaders, including six former U.S. Surgeons General, have penned an open letter to policymakers, urging a radical shift in perceiving buildings not just as structures but as critical levers for public health. The message is clear: our facilities impact our well-being profoundly, and it's time for a policy overhaul. The letter uncovers compelling economic benefits, projecting a potential $200 billion annual productivity gain and emphasizing the need for policymakers to prioritize human health in building investments. As our governments invest billions in buildings, Jason Hartke, Executive Vice President of External Affairs and Advocacy at IWBI, calls for aligning these investments with sound policy solutions to ensure substantial positive health outcomes. Dr. Kenneth Moritsugu, a former Acting Surgeon General, emphasizes that policymakers have a responsibility to recognize the essential role that buildings play in protecting and enhancing our health, advocating for informed actions accordingly. In essence, the letter is a directive to build for health, now and for the future. #HealthyBuildings #PublicHealth #BuildingForWellBeing https://lnkd.in/gRexNgdz International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), Rachel Hodgdon, Joseph Allen

The BWBR Omaha team has worked with many Critical Access Hospitals looking for smaller-scale expansions and renovations, rather than completely new facilities. In examining these projects, a powerful theme has emerged — that these “small” projects can actually have an outsize impact. Check out a few examples: https://loom.ly/fNspfdE

Leading the Charge: Pioneering Innovative Development and Construction Projects – New Venture Coming Soon
Just attended the Bisnow Future of Scottsdale event this morning and walked away with some great insights on the future of healthcare. Our aging population will require constantly evolving needs not only from a medical standpoint, but also in building design and future expandability to meet those needs. A big shoutout to Jason Barclay Morris for moderating the panel on Building for Scottsdale Residents and providing some excellent perspectives and thought-provoking challenges in the world of entitlements. Some key takeaways from the event: - Tara B.'s discussion on IPD and collaboration was particularly relevant for the construction industry, especially in healthcare. - The idea of Blue Zones and their potential impact on healthcare was also discussed (had to look that one up). - It was interesting to learn that hospitals are owning a large amount of real estate and considering releasing properties to put back into growing facilities. - And I didn't know that Banner is the largest employer in Arizona? (Not Petsmart?) Overall, a great event with plenty of valuable insights. #healthcare #construction #Scottsdale #agingpopulation

Check out JLL's Chart of the Week! Off-campus medical office buildings have seen an increase in occupancy and absorption. Industry experts are attributing this increase to the demand for care from the older population. There's been an increase in both on-and-off campus MOB's, but the accessibility of an off-campus MOB (typically because of the location, such as a building previously used for retail) makes them more appealing. (From the webinar) The first case study is from Copenhagen, Denmark. The project is called Future Sølund Urban Nursing Home and it features intergenerational mixing and mixed-use, and by that I mean retail. Housing and institutional uses are located on the same site as well as access to green space. These renderings are from a winning entry to an architecture competition. The building is currently under construction. It's scheduled to complete in 2026. It includes nursing home units, homes for young people, homes for special needs, daycare centre, shops, cafes and workshops. So in this equivalent of a long term care project, you have shops and cafes that invite the general public to enter the senior housing, to enter the nursing home and participate in the lives of the people living there. The pathogenic approach limits the interaction between residents and the outside world to reduce the risk of harm. The salutogenic approach promotes community and intergenerational mixing, sense of manageability, access to family and friends.
