Digital Life Institute members to present a talk on Technology and Trafficking: Risks and Prevention in the Digital Age 24-hour Conference on Global Organized Crime, October 30, 7:30PM Speakers: Julius Kaka , Shawna Hill , Délon Alain Omrow, PhD , Vanesa Singh and Isabel Pedersen About This Talk The aim of the proposed symposium is to explore the wicked problem of human trafficking, looking specifically at how human traffickers are incorporating digital technology into their criminal activity to trap and exploit people using deception, violence, or coercion. Traffickers are now leveraging digital technology to recruit and control their victims, using keywords on social media to identify potential victims and using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to isolate and track both victims and those willing to pay for them as labor or for sexual exploitation. This panel will offer intersectional testimonials from survivors of human trafficking, but also analyze human trafficking AI-prevention technologies. https://lnkd.in/g2R2Um72

This insightful article by Mike Downing on Homeland Security Today delves into the evolving landscape of criminal networks and how law enforcement is leveraging AI to combat them. Criminal groups are adapting to digital platforms, making collaboration easier and investigations more challenging. With AI-powered open-source intelligence (OSINT), investigators can track and disrupt criminal activities effectively. From node identification to link analysis and functionality, AI enables precise targeting of critical components within criminal networks. Inter-agency coordination is also key, with Fusion Centers playing a crucial role in data sharing and collaboration. By focusing on four key areas — node identification, link analysis and functionality, disrupting operational capabilities, and inter-agency coordination — law enforcement can significantly close the technology gap. Every year, Merseyside Police (MP) process over 300K emergency 999 calls, and of these, 150K are recorded as ‘uncategorised’. This means that although they aren’t technically emergencies, these calls should still be followed up. The challenge for Merseyside was understanding what these ‘uncategorised’ calls were about and could anything be done to address them? Join us live on Monday 8th July at 10:00 to find out how: 🤝 AI is helping MP to ensure that callers get the right support at the right time ☎ Machine learning is helping to resolve emergency 999 calls quicker 💻 AI is helping better predict demand and reduce pressures on their call centre staff 😍 Technology can help the police to support their colleagues and improve their wellbeing During our live Q&A, you’ll have the chance to pose your questions to our AI specialists and a special guest speaker, Data Analyst, Stephen Smith, from Merseyside Police! AI's Transformative Role in Combating Human Trafficking As a medical professional and member of Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH), I've gained insights into how technology can protect vulnerable populations. What's become increasingly clear is that artificial intelligence is revolutionizing our ability to prevent human trafficking through unprecedented pattern detection and early warning capabilities. Today's AI systems are transforming how we identify potential trafficking activities, analyzing datasets across financial transactions, online communications, and cross-border movements in hours rather than months. The impact is remarkable: law enforcement can now detect suspicious patterns across multiple jurisdictions simultaneously, while support organizations can break through language barriers instantly and connect victims with resources more effectively than ever before. Implementing this requires strong collaboration between technology companies, law enforcement, and healthcare institutions. These AI tools, when properly implemented with human oversight and ethical guidelines, have the potential to disrupt trafficking networks before they can cause harm. I invite fellow professionals across all sectors to support these technological advances and their responsible deployment in protecting vulnerable individuals worldwide. #ArtificialIntelligence #TechForGood #PublicSafety #Healthcare #Innovation

Register today for the "AI is Revolutionizing Public Safety, Criminal Justice, and Security - Are We Ready?" webinar on August 28, 2024 at 12:30PM for a discussion on the transformative impact of #artificialintelligence (AI) on public safety, criminal justice, and security. AI is changing how crimes are committed, investigated, and prevented, offering advanced tools for law enforcement but also presenting new challenges. Current efforts to integrate AI across these sectors lack a unified approach, despite the pressing need to address recruitment issues, rising crime rates, and the ethical use of AI. To address these challenges and ensure responsible use of AI, two blue-ribbon panels of experts from law enforcement, criminal justice, and private security will present, including NSA’s Board Treasurer, Sheriff Michael Mastronardy, Ocean County, New Jersey. A real child victim or an AI generated victim? Hotlines, law enforcement and industry around the world are dealing with the emerging threat of generative AI child sexual abuse material. Our UK hotline, the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), has showcased a particular commitment in staying on top of the latest developments and confronting emerging challenges. As one of the first hotlines to identify reports of AI generated abuse imagery, the IWF decided to investigate this newly trending type of material, often almost indistinguishable from real images. In their conducted research, the IWF assessed over 11,000 AI generated images depicting children, demonstrating the rising severity of this issue. Based on these reports the IWF calls for immediate technological solutions and legal action to address this content. These trends send a message that we need to constantly evolve our digital safety processes.
