From CH4 to H2: Regulating a Non-Existent Market Last week, the Council adopted gas and hydrogen market package. But… The hydrogen market's scale remains unclear, and the most cost-effective path for hydrogen production has yet to be determined. Currently, there is no established definition for 'low-carbon' hydrogen, adding to the regulatory uncertainty. The focus has primarily been on electrolysis and steam methane reforming, often overlooking pyrolysis, which could be a cheaper alternative to 'green hydrogen.' In an alternative scenario, if pyrolysis received more attention, there would be no need for large-scale, expensive hydrogen networks. Existing and new gas pipelines could transport natural gas to feed pyrolyzers located near hydrogen consumers. The solid carbon byproduct of pyrolysis could then be utilized in industries, enhancing overall efficiency and sustainability. #EU #hydrogen #naturalgas #greendeal #pyrolysis (The image is meant to attract attention:))
