🚨 How do you build a winning team? When I first started out in journalism, it was tough to even get a foot in the door. The classic catch-22: every beginner's role seemed to require years of experience. But how can you get the experience when you need the experience just to get the position? That challenge drove me to create Beyond the Pitch, with one goal in mind: to disrupt the way the industry operates, especially in women's football. As we've grown, most recently bringing in new team members, I kept one key thing in mind during the hiring process. Rather than asking, “What experience do you have?” I asked about their journey in women's football. That’s where the passion lives. When someone shares their story, their commitment, and their love for the game, it shines through. It’s that passion and drive that makes someone a perfect fit for our team. That’s how you build a winning team. It’s about finding people who work hard because they believe in what they do. That’s how you build a community. Coming from radio and seeing the broadcasting media landscape shrink so much over the years, and still shrinking even more today, more and more companies are looking to add work or content creation duties to their workers with either little or no pay increases. I couldn't stand that in radio seeing myself and my coworkers work endless hours for "the corporation" and not be properly acknowledged. No, bringing in a box of doughnuts doesn't count as appreciation for added work to my job title. However, I also understand when something is a passion project and there aren't funds to pay what the owner wishes they could. There is intention there. And how would projects like these get off the ground without ground-level support? There's a very fine line here and one that I am still learning to navigate. When others say, "you should get paid for the work you do" or "pay a living wage", yes, I get that and support that. However, I also wholeheartedly believe in the power of reciprocity if knowing the true intention or impact that comes from doing something without the sole purpose of being financially compensated - that it's not tied to your daily income to bring food to the table. Basically, if there is good intention and the impact is valued + I'm not dependent on this income, you've got my time and attention - our values have to line up! So the other day when I received in my inbox a payment for $4.70 Canadian ($5.19 Canadian after USD conversion and minus processing fees) I was surprised and thoroughly delighted!!! I didn't expect to be paid for writing my article for Sound Sorceresses. Yes, she mentioned something about payment from profits if there were any, but it was never about the money. I went in with the notion of trying my hand at writing, being a part of a new thing, and supporting Stephanie Fuccio because she was part of the launch (and if Steph says it's good, I'm in!) Growing up I had money issues and even today there's still a lot of growth happening to change the way I think about money, but who knew almost $5 would make someone smile that much!! While blockbusters like Barbie hit the headlines, unfortunately last year was not the “Year of the Woman.” The 2023 Annenberg Inclusion Initiative report actually reveals a decline in female representation in leading roles, dropping from 44% in 2022 to a concerning 30%, matching 2010 levels. The Epidemic of Invisibility disproportionately affects women of color. To put into perspective: 99/100 lacked Native/Pacific Islander women 81/100 lacked Middle Eastern/North African women 62/100 lacked Latina representation 56/100 lacked multiracial/multiethnic women 49/100 lacked Asian women 39/100 lacked Black women In contrast, only 12/100 of the top 100 films lacked white women. This also affects queer and disabled characters! Only 2.2% of all speaking characters in 2023's top films were shown with a disability, a statistic that hasn’t changed over the last decade! 76/100 featured zero queer characters, and there were only two trans characters in 2023. Diversity isn't just a trend, it's good business. Beyond the fact that representation is obviously a good cause, diverse storytelling is a proven box office driver. Audiences crave stories that reflect our complex world. The industry needs a shake-up, and smaller studios and creators are leading the charge for inclusion. #RES2024 is always eventful and exhausting, but the best parts are spending time and sharing space with amazing #Native professionals from many backgrounds, talents, and expertise including #tribalmedia and #NativePR. I was on a panel, "Talking Points: Why You Should Agree to Media Interviews," with fellow PR pro Candace Hamana (Hopi), owner of Badger PR; friend Levi Rickert (Prairie Band Potawatomi), editor of Native News Online; and Bryan Pollard (Cherokee) of The Associated Press. As a #publicrelations professional and former reporter, I shared with the audience three helpful tips: 1) Invest in a communication/public relations professional.; 2) Get media training for your spokespeople.; and 3) Build relationships with reporters in #tribal and mainstream media and maintain those connections. Overall message: Tribes must be the keepers and tellers of their own stories.
