Mandela's vision was a South Africa, and indeed, a world, where every woman, man, and child had equal opportunities. Although we have made some significant strides towards this ideal, let's be honest: we are VERY far from achieving it. Inequalities persist across locations, industries, and professions. This Mandela Day (and the rest of July), let's commit to introspection. As professionals, let's review our workplaces' policies and guidelines. Are they truly fostering equality, equity, and inclusivity? Are there hidden biases or barriers preventing diverse voices and talents from thriving? Mandela dedicated his life to dismantling a system of oppression. In his spirit, let us dismantle the barriers within our own spheres of influence.
