LGBTQ+ individuals, especially youth, are overrepresented in the homeless population. They also face unique barriers to seeking help, like fear of harassment or trouble finding shelters that respect their gender identity. 💔 This month and every month, Hope Atlanta provides a safe space for our LGBTQ+ neighbors experiencing homelessness. As we celebrate #PrideMonth🏳️🌈, let’s work toward a future where everyone feels at home in their own identities and communities. cc: Julio Carrillo

On this Day of Silence, we join the LGBTQ+ community and allies in honoring the silence that speaks volumes about the struggles, discrimination, and bullying faced by LGBTQ+ youth, especially in schools. We recognize the challenges that LGBTQ+ youth encounter daily. Many of them are at a higher risk of homelessness due to rejection, discrimination, or abuse from their families and communities. No one should ever face the harsh realities of homelessness simply for being their authentic selves. We provide shelter options and mental health resources to help provide a safe space. Our goal is to break down the barriers that lead to homelessness within the LGBTQ+ community. As we observe the Day of Silence, let us remember that silence can be a powerful catalyst for change. Let's break the silence on homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth and work towards a city where everyone has a safe place to call home.

For the LGBTQ+ community, social determinants of health play a major role in health outcomes. 1.5 million people a year experience homelessness, and for members of the LGBTQ+ community, the statistics are much worse. This #pridemonth we revisit a blog from Chief Operating Officer Matt Goudreau, highlighting ways you can take action or volunteer, along with wonderful organizations to support: https://hubs.la/Q02DkgCs0

Even though Pride Month has come to an end, our commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community in adult social care settings remains strong. While there has been an improvement in meeting the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in many aspects, we still lack appropriate support in social care services. There is also an assumption that all older people are grandparents and have family to fall back on when their health declines and they need support. However, 90% of LGBTQ+ people are ageing without children, and many have little contact with their biological families. This increases the need for more formal support and care services in later life. Although the number of LGBTQ+ seniors will double in ten years, there are few, if any, existing care schemes with a focus on older LGBTQ+ residents. The same is true of care homes. That’s why we believe that live-in care offers an excellent alternative for those seeking care in an inclusive and supportive environment. According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ youth are at risk because of a lack of acceptance, understanding, empathy, and compassion. That lack comes at a great cost: a national survey conducted in 2023 found 41% of LGBTQ+ youth have seriously considered suicide in the last year. LifeWorks NW is proud to participate in Zero Suicide, a nationwide initiative to bring together care providers and communities to end suicide. One tool our communities can use: 988. Call or text to connect with a trained counselor and local services, including specialists in youth or LGTBQ+ care.
