We're hiring a Marketing Intern right now. Here are 2 takeaways from my viewpoint on hiring for this position. Hopefully, they might help those looking to land an internship this Fall or those frustrated. 1. This position is competitive, even for a small agency like mine. We have 10 great candidates so far who will all be explored further. The job post has been up for less than a week and has no crazy ad budgets behind it. While the job description mentions previous work experience as a plus in the field, most of the top applicants already have prior work experience in the field. 2. I'm surprised at the lack of traction on Handshake. It's the platform our local university encourages students to use to land internships. A small handful of students have completed their profiles, but most of them just have the basic information. Students can set themselves apart by including a photo of themselves and a little more depth on their profiles, especially for a marketing role where some of these skills will come into play. Interviews are already filling up my available time this week and next. I'm excited to get to know the applicants a little better and try to find the best fit for both sides for this role!

I’ve never had an unpaid intern in my entire career trajectory of being a fashion business owner and an online entrepreneur. And I’ve hired over 50-60 interns atleast. When I was just starting out, and I could not afford assistants for exhibitions and shoots, I still paid the people for their food + commute + any other expense they might have incurred. I was 22 and I had the decency to do it because I know what it felt like when people made you work for free, blocked you after the work was done or treat you not like a human. So, I detest it when BIG corporates and small ones do it in the name of exposure. Hear me out kiddo, if they are saying it’s “exposure”, it’s them bloody lying through their teeth. They are not hiring you to do you a favour. They are hiring you because they want free labour. Big corporate giants are supposed to lead with example and unfortunately I see them exploiting students time and time again! It’s not cool. If you are worth it, they will pay. Also, atleast ask for ₹5-10k MINIMUM as an intern depending on if it’s your first one or second one. This is stuff no one tells you. Don’t let them fool you.
