🥤 US sets national drinking water standards On April 10, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (#EPA) issued the first national drinking water standard with the force of law to protect communities from exposure to harmful per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (#PFAS), also known as "forever chemicals". 👉 The main contents include: ✅ Establish maximum contaminant levels (#MCLs) for six PFAS in drinking water and determine their health-based, non-enforceable maximum contaminant level targets (MCLGs), including #PFOA, #PFOS, #PFHxS, #PFNA, and #HFPO-DA as individual contaminant MCLs. ✅ The relevant PFAS shall be monitored, with 3 years to complete initial monitoring (until 2027), followed by ongoing compliance monitoring and disclosure to the public, and 5 years (until 2029) to implement solutions to reduce PFAS if the level of PFAS in drinking water exceeds MCL, starting in 2029.  #US #water #foodstandard #MCL #PFOA #PFOS #PFHxS #PFNA

EPA released its Second Annual Progress Report in December 2023, setting forth EPA’s accomplishments to-date and plans to regulate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) through 2024. PFAS regulation during 2023 occurred at a revord pace, and 2024 appears to be no different, with EPA planning a number of significant actions to continue to address PFAS across environmental media. Most notably, EPA is seeking to finalize two significant rulemakings in the 1st Quarter 2024. The first includes a rule that will designate two PFAS as CERCLA hazardous substances. The second is a rule that will establish national primary drinking water maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for PFOA, PFOS, and four additional four additional PFAS chemicals. #PFAS #EPA #enforcement #CERCLA #CWA #SDWA

In October 2023, the U.S. EPA finalized a rule to require enhanced PFAS reporting, removing a 2020-era loophole that enabled companies to avoid reporting their production or use of small amounts of PFAS. This rule classifies PFAS as “chemicals of special concern,” thereby requiring industries to report to the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) any amount of the 189 covered PFAS used. This week, the US EPA finalized its enforceable #PFAS drinking water regulations. Six PFAS chemicals (PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS, and GenX) are now required for quarterly and biannual testing at all ~66,000 public drinking water supplies in the United States. This is a very important step for protecting human health. Robust and accurate testing will be required to ensure compliance and measure the success of any remediation efforts.
