Five years ago, new mom Jen Done was feeling overwhelmed and anxious, with little motivation to leave the house. When a doctor helped her identify that she was experiencing postpartum depression, Jen felt a sense of relief. With her family’s encouragement, Jen began to pursue triathlon to prioritize her mental and physical wellbeing.
Watch the latest #HumansofHOKA film to learn about Jen’s experience and how she found herself at the start line of this past year's IRONMAN World Championships in Kona: bit.ly/HoHJenDone.

I just got to the point where I was crying pretty much all the time. Thinking I have no idea what I do or where where I go, I went and kind of had a real meltdown on a on a female doctor and she actually said to me, do you think this is this could be postpartum depression? I built myself up, but I managed to get to a point where I could put my daughter in and take her for a run in the buggy. The Iron Man Pic Foundation put out a post saying they were looking for 30 women to go to Corona to help raise awareness of mental health and inclusion and diversity. Thing for me, like I just kept going over my head of why I'm doing this, why I'm here. I'm in the Iron Man in Hawaii. How far I've come.
It truly does, infact any activity we do in open air be it open water swimming, hiking, running or cycling, it helps handle stress better although healing from traumatic events is not a linear journey, it has its own highs and lows.
For the past six months, I have been reeling under severe PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder ) it comes in bursts, there are days when I cannot get up from my bed and then there are days when I am running a half marathon, swimming in oceans, cycling 50 kilometres.
Healing journey , lets face it , takes time, sometimes the toxicity you face is so intense that your system takes years to heal from it.
Writing out also helps, talking to people has been counter effective for me because my triggers get switched on when I hear biased stories , I still do not know whom to believe and not to believe.
One thing that has worked alright and not made me go completely insane is hitting the gym every day even if I do not want to workout I just pack my bags and show up at the place.
There are days when I just sit in my gym doing nothing just sleeping or watching people exercise but I try to get out of my house as much as I can.
Do not force healing, if you want to break down on some days when you feel like shit, break down, do not hold yourself back.
There are no quick fixes, one has to feel all the sadness deeply and get right through it even if it takes years but most importantly express yourself be it through writing, singing, doodling, wood- work, making crafts - make art.
Art is your life jacket that help you reach the shore of peacefulness

If you have any doubt about whether or not endurance athletes can benefit from strength training, I’ve got a story for you.
A lady came to me after completing a 100km hiking event, with what a specialist had labelled the worst case of ITB syndrome he’d ever seen. He actually told her she’d never run again (ridiculous thing to say 🤦♂️).
Anyway, after a long process involving lots of strength training and jump/plyometric work, combined with slowly building back into running, she just completed her 2nd marathon of the year, with nil issues afterwards 🙌🙌🙌
