Our wonderful conservation team were recognised at the Maggolee Awards recently for delivering the Boollam Boollam Willum festivals.
The awards recognise Victorian local governments working in partnership with First Peoples to support self-determination, advance reconciliation, and strengthen shared decision making.
The festivals (meaning 'where butterflies live' in traditional language) served as a celebration of traditional culture, preservation of biodiversity, understanding of indigenous practices, and caring for our natural environment.
Congratulations team! 👏 👏 👏
Wilderlands CEO Ash Knop joined Jason Chong on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Evenings to discuss our partnership w/ Adelaide Festival.
A huge thank you to Anthea Hagar for making this interview possible, it provided a chance to dive into the details of the partnership that will see the festival secure some of the world’s first voluntary biodiversity credits and provide a simple way for attendees to unlock their very own Wilderlands profile protecting a one square metre patch of precious biodiversity at the Coorong in the process.
Entering the second year of the partnership, the collaboration has a collective goal of reaching a total of 5,000 square metres protected with attendees able to simply visit the Wilderlands website to claim their unit or use the QR code on signs at select Adelaide Festival and Writers’ Week events – to signup for free and secure their very own one square metre patch that will be protected.
The Coorong Lakes property is such a special project due to the innovative partnership between the conservation organisation Cassinia Environmental and the Traditional Owners of the region, the Ngarrindjeri people, who are working together to preserve one of Australia’s most important wetland areas.
It’s a project full of so much life with over 222 species of native plant recorded during our spring monitoring, with the noteworthy addition of Slender Smoke-bush (Conospermum patens), a species regarded as endangered under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
It’s also home to incredible native orchid diversity with over 30 species recently recorded including the world’s largest known populations (on private land) of the nationally endangered Metallic Sun-orchid (Thelymitra epipactoides) – one of Australia’s largest and most impressive sun-orchids.
The opportunity to expose the people of Adelaide to this gem of nature so close to their doorstep and create a simple way to protect it, forever, makes this a very special collaboration.

This is an excellent example of our sustainability work i.e reducing co2 emissions and enhancing biodiversity by restoring an old peat bog area to wetland.
Today on World Wetlands Day we share the restauration progress that has been made since 2021, when the Ropolansuo area in Finland got re-wetted. This 56 hectare former peat production area, is now transforming into a thriving habitat for wetland birds and diverse wildlife.
It is part of our biodiversity programme within our mother company Neova Group, which aims to enhance nature by re-wetting and afforesting old peat lands, in collaboration with local communities.
Learn more about the bird species spotted and the future plans we have in the restauration of Ropolansuo: https://lnkd.in/ey2Yd3Ea
Young people must get their hands DIRTY for the environment!
Today on the International Day for the Promotion of Biodiversity, the United Nations invites different stakeholders to highlight their contributions to the Biodiversity Plan and become #PartOfThePlan.
We asked, how do we get young people to become #PartOfThePlan and care about biodiversity?
“It is crucial to facilitate experiential learning for young people to understand the importance of biodiversity by taking them outdoors, giving them exposure to different habitats, and creating meaningful experiences. Making biodiversity accessible—from neighborhood parks to wildlife sanctuaries—is key. Young people should feel a sense of ownership in preserving these spaces.” - Sohail Madan, an ecologist and conservation expert.
The transformation of Asola Bhatti is a story to learn from. Once a barren mining site, the sanctuary today is home to diverse wildlife, flora, fauna and North India’s largest butterfly park, which was led by Sohail and his team.
This transformation did not occur because of the heroic acts of one or two people. Through the 1990’s many young people, researchers, local communities and civil society organisations collectively led the restoration and conservation of the area.
Today, Asola Sanctuary has become a favorite spot for Delhiites to visit whenever they want to soak in a little nature. It's a compelling experience that draws people back and creates ownership for the ecology that nourishes them.
We call this NOURISHING NOW - having a safe haven where you can breathe easy and feel grounded, and if the space does that, you will value it.
What's your #NourishingNow space?
10.000 years ago, the (extinct) Steppe bison could still be seen roaming across the Iberian Peninsula. Now, the bison has returned to Portugal🇵🇹
🦬 8 European bisons will call the Greater Coa Valley their new home, thanks to the efforts of Rewilding Portugal and the European Wildlife Comeback Fund.
Bisons have a fundamental role in opening clearings, reducing flammable vegetation and thus, reducing fire risk. They create biodiversity-rich landscapes, by grazing, foraging, trampling and fertilizing. And will surely be a new tourism attraction in the territory.
I remember seeing them for the first time happily grazing in the dunes of the Nationaal Park Zuid Kennermerland, impressive and majestic creatures🦬
The European bison, Europe’s heaviest terrestrial animal, descends from the Steppe bison and will fulfill the same ecological functions. Mainly spread across central and eastern Europe, the european bison was at the brink of extinction just until recent decades. Rewilding Europe, working with several partner organisations, has been actively bringing the species back to European landscapes. The estimated population in the wild is of 9000 individuals!
We've been asked this question for a long time and now it's true. European bison have arrived in Portugal for the first time, thanks to our rewilding efforts 🦬🌿
A herd of eight European bison has just arrived at Herdade do Vale Feitoso in Penha Garcia. Managed in cooperation with the Rewilding Portugal team, this herd will increase carbon sequestration, stimulate biodiversity and support the growth of nature tourism.

Surrounded by the lush greenery of Sri Lanka's wet zone, Suduwelipotha is home to the #CinnamonRainforestRestoration Project.
With a focus on restoring 59 acres of forest land, we aim to enrich native biodiversity and create vital wildlife habitats for endangered species.
As we commemorate our milestone anniversary, this project serves as a testament to the incredible impact of teamwork in conservation efforts while we grow a future.
Here are a few highlights:
- Completed Habitat Restoration Goal: 20,000 native trees planted as of January 2024.
- Updated Habitat Restoration Goal: 25,000 native trees to be planted by the end of 2024.
- Goal Impact: Estimated 600,000 kg carbon absorbed annually and 12 Million litres of oxygen produced per hour by 2045.
Supporting Costa Rica’s Rich Biodiversity!
In the heart of Costa Rica, sustainable teak plantations do more than grow valuable timber; they nurture and support the country’s rich biodiversity. Teak trees can be vital components of our ecosystem, offering habitats for a beautifully diverse range of species.
Costa Rica’s unique biodiversity, including toucans, jaguars, and various other wildlife, benefits from the forest-like environments created in responsibly managed teak plantations.
Here are just a few of Costa Rica’s beautiful wildlife that was spotted on our Teaka plantation.

🌍 Celebrating World Conservation Day: The Majestic Baobabs of Oppierandjie 🌿
In honour of the recent World Conservation Day, we shine a spotlight on the majestic Baobab trees of Oppierandjie, one of our esteemed Northern Producers in Limpopo Province, South Africa. These ancient giants, with some estimated to be 2000-2500 years old in the mango orchards and others 100-250 years old in the chili fields, are a living testament to nature's resilience and beauty.
At Oppierandjie, 43 Baobabs grace the fields, a protected species under South African law since 1941. These iconic trees, often called "upside-down trees" due to their unique appearance, provide not just visual splendor but also ecological benefits, supporting a wide range of wildlife and local communities.
In addition to these remarkable trees, Oppierandjie is dedicated to conservation, preserving two-thirds of the farm in its natural state. This commitment to maintaining the wild landscape alongside sustainable farming practices exemplifies the balance between agriculture and environmental stewardship.
Join us in celebrating these extraordinary trees and the tireless conservation efforts of our partners. Together, we honour the natural heritage and biodiversity of our region, ensuring these ancient sentinels continue to thrive for generations to come.
