Starting with zero acres in 2022, Driscoll’s nurseries and growers have already recycled nearly 8,000 acres of fumigation and bed mulch plastic, including 3,000 acres of bed mulch in 2024 alone. Today Keefe joined Paul Nowak, Executive Director, GreenBlue Org for a fireside chat at Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC)'s Impact Conference. 🙋♀️ Keefe challened us to ask the question, "How do we make the most of this moment and how do we apply data?" 🔋She talked about how The Recycling Partnership and her optimism is powered by three things: 1. Courage 2. Optimism 3. Badassery ♻️ And how recycling plays a pivotal role, but we can't recycle our way out of the situation we are in. We need to think about packaging design and how the package interfaces with the recycling system. In all global competitions, the conversation around sustainability goes beyond single-use plastics and eco-friendly practices. True sustainability involves safeguarding and nurturing the environment, with a key focus on prioritizing the well-being of people and families.

Originating on April 22, 1970, Earth Day marks a pivotal moment in environmental advocacy, led by Senator Gaylord Nelson and inspired by the public's increasing awareness of pollution. This day mobilized 20 million Americans, leading to legislation including the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.   Since then, Earth Day has expanded globally, involving over 1 billion people in more than 193 countries, and continues to be a day of action and awareness across the globe.   This year, the theme for Earth Day is "Planet vs. Plastics," focusing on combating plastic pollution. Various events, educational programs, public speeches, and community clean-up events are planned.   At Metsä Board Americas, we’re proud to be part of the global effort towards fighting back the effects of climate change on Earth Day and every day.   We have ambitious sustainability targets including 100% fossil-free production and raw materials, and reduced process water use by the end of 2030. In our wood supply, we promote regenerative forestry practices. This past year:   ✅ How2Recycle®, a packaging recyclability labeling system, pre-qualified all Metsä Board’s submitted folding boxboard (FBB) and white kraftliner (WKL) grades of paperboard as “Widely Recyclable,” the most favorable designation given in terms of recyclability for a packaging component.   ✅ Our studies on Pharma Packaging revealed a 60% reduction in carbon footprint with optimized fresh fiber paperboard based on life cycle assessment. The lower carbon footprint is due to the use of fossil free energy in their production and lighter weight.    ✅ We’ve been recognized for leadership in corporate transparency and performance on climate change and water security by global environmental non-profit CDP, securing a place on its annual ‘A List’. This is the eighth year that Metsä Board achieved the position on the CDP Climate A list and the CDP Water A list.  What are you doing to help?
