Earlier this week staff learnt how to create produce bags in our first lunch and learn session for 2024. 👜 The produce bags were made from reclaimed material (lace curtains) and is one of the simplest ways to use less plastic. An average plastic bag is used for a mere 12 minutes and takes hundreds of years to break down. ♻️ The lunch and learn sessions are organised by the Hobsons Bay Environment Action Team – a group of staff interested in sustainability and the environment.

🎧Pop in your headphones and get ready to dive into the latest episode of the #MulchMatters Podcast! 📢 🍓In this episode we explore the world of sustainable agriculture with James duBois, Senior Manager of Environmental Sustainability at Driscoll’s. With over 15 years of experience in water stewardship and environmental risk management, James shares invaluable insights on reducing field plastics and improving sustainability practices in berry production. 🍓Learn about Driscoll’s journey as a fifth-generation family-owned company, their commitment to environmental stewardship, and the innovative approaches they’re taking to minimize the impact of field plastics. From high tunnels to drip tapes, James discusses the various applications of field plastics in berry production and the strides Driscoll’s is making towards their ambitious recycling goals. 🍓Please note that since the recording of this podcast in Fall 2023, Driscoll’s has made significant progress toward their goal of recycling 100% of field plastics. Starting with zero acres in 2022, Driscoll’s nurseries and growers have already recycled nearly 8,000 acres of fumigation and bed mulch plastic, including 3,000 acres of bed mulch in 2024 alone. This progress marks a significant milestone for the industry and brings Driscoll’s one step closer to meeting their 2025 recycling goals. 🍓🎧🌱Don’t miss this fascinating conversation about the challenges and breakthroughs in making berry farming more sustainable and environmentally friendly. 🥳 So glad Keefe Harrison, CEO, The Recycling Partnership was born! Today Keefe joined Paul Nowak, Executive Director, GreenBlue Org for a fireside chat at Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC)'s Impact Conference. 🙋♀️ Keefe challened us to ask the question, "How do we make the most of this moment and how do we apply data?" 🔋She talked about how The Recycling Partnership and her optimism is powered by three things: 1. Courage 2. Optimism 3. Badassery ♻️ And how recycling plays a pivotal role, but we can't recycle our way out of the situation we are in. We need to think about packaging design and how the package interfaces with the recycling system. We must match the size of the solution to the size of the problem. 👏 👏 👏 #HBDKeefe #justgettingstarted

Originating on April 22, 1970, Earth Day marks a pivotal moment in environmental advocacy, led by Senator Gaylord Nelson and inspired by the public's increasing awareness of pollution. This day mobilized 20 million Americans, leading to legislation including the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Since then, Earth Day has expanded globally, involving over 1 billion people in more than 193 countries, and continues to be a day of action and awareness across the globe. This year, the theme for Earth Day is "Planet vs. Plastics," focusing on combating plastic pollution. Various events, educational programs, public speeches, and community clean-up events are planned. At Metsä Board Americas, we’re proud to be part of the global effort towards fighting back the effects of climate change on Earth Day and every day. We have ambitious sustainability targets including 100% fossil-free production and raw materials, and reduced process water use by the end of 2030. In our wood supply, we promote regenerative forestry practices. This past year: ✅ How2Recycle®, a packaging recyclability labeling system, pre-qualified all Metsä Board’s submitted folding boxboard (FBB) and white kraftliner (WKL) grades of paperboard as “Widely Recyclable,” the most favorable designation given in terms of recyclability for a packaging component. ✅ Our studies on Pharma Packaging revealed a 60% reduction in carbon footprint with optimized fresh fiber paperboard based on life cycle assessment. The lower carbon footprint is due to the use of fossil free energy in their production and lighter weight. ✅ We’ve been recognized for leadership in corporate transparency and performance on climate change and water security by global environmental non-profit CDP, securing a place on its annual ‘A List’. This is the eighth year that Metsä Board achieved the position on the CDP Climate A list and the CDP Water A list. What are you doing to help? Tell us in the comments below. #Earthday2024 #climatechange #sustainability
