Phew, it's taken us a few days to digest everything we learnt at HLTH Europe last week! We had a fantastic time meeting with the entire health ecosystem, making some incredible connections, and gaining valuable new insights! Here are some of our highlights: 💡 Google's Chief Health Officer, Karen DeSalvo spoke about the role of Big Tech in transforming the healthcare landscape. Karen shared that the most critical sectors in healthcare that need addressing are the four M's: Metabolic Disease, Maternal Health, Malignancies, and Mental Health, each of which are core priority areas for the WHIS team. 🚀 Digital transformation, AI, and technology are fundamental components in overcoming the biggest barriers in healthcare by relieving disease burden, addressing workforce challenges, managing information overload, and combating burnout. 🏥 Women's health is an increasing priority in healthcare with pitching sessions, panel discussions, and workshops centred on women's health. It was exciting to witness the enthusiasm surrounding it! 🌠 We left HLTH Europe feeling invigorated and we can't wait to continue tackling the most pressing challenges in women's health and beyond! #hlth #hltheurope #healthcare #womenshealth

🙏 Last year, Bjorn Westgard and I had the honor of co-leading a project on the topic of patient-centered digital care for chronic conditions, made possible through partnerships between HealthPartners Institute, Antonia Apolinario-Wilcoxon, Ed. D, our Community Advisory Council for Research and Evaluation, and the Eugene Washington Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Engagement Award program. 🤝 We brought together patients, community members, researchers, and health care workers through discussion groups, surveys, and two large multi-stakeholder virtual convenings. Together, we unpacked the meaning of patient-centered care in a digital era and defined a set of recommendations to researchers and health care systems about how to assess the patient-centeredness and equity impacts of digital care strategies. 📽 We also had the exciting opportunity to work with Free Country Media to produce a 17-minute short film about patient-centered digital care. The film features the stories and perspectives of five patients, community leaders and advocates, and health care workers about how digital strategies affect the most vulnerable patients. The film has been submitted to APHA’s Public Health Film Festival, held in Minneapolis this October as part of the annual meeting. 💻 You can now access the materials and film at bit.ly/hpi-digitalcare. 💪 Thank you to all who made this project possible. 🌟Putting women’s health in focus at HLTH Europe ♀️ Women spend more of their lives in poor health than men – and yet women-focused healthcare is significantly under-invested relative to men’s health. Closing the health gap is more critical than ever – and for that, we need a shift in the culture and mindset of our health systems and how they apply research and technology 🤝 With HLTH Europe kicking off next week in Amsterdam 🇳🇱, we’re excited to see so many talks and workshops that put women’s health at the forefront. Join a hackathon and shape breakthroughs with experts and international peers. 💬 Yes it is: The future of health is female 📅 June 17 at 2:00pm The US may be leading tech investment, but a mere 1% of healthcare research and innovation investment goes to female-specific conditions beyond oncology - this talk is an urgent conversation about directing investment and attention to women’s health, and to the areas that need it most.  👩🏿⚕️ 🚑 💬 We’re not (!) all the same: Addressing women’s health as a priority 📅 June 18 at 2:40pm Healthcare’s one-size-fits all approach across men and women doesn’t work – and this talk intends to rewrite the script and give women’s health the starring role it deserves, focusing on the incredible diversity of female biology and the unique healthcare needs of women. 💬 Mind the gap: Why diagnostic disparities damage women’s health 📅 June 18 at 11:30am Women are diagnosed later than men for over 700 diseases, according to a Danish study conducted over more than 20 years. Looking forward to attending the BMJ Research Forum next week and joining colleagues across the health and research sectors to explore the topic of "Driving real-world impact from health research". On day 2, I'll be joining Catriona Manville, Nick Bird, Hollie Panther & Emma Lowe for a panel discussion titled: "Patient engagement: Designing research questions – who gets to do it?" We're excited for a lively conversation, exploring: - who gets to shape the research agenda? - what does "patient centricity" really mean? - how can we ensure the voices of patients, care partners, family members, communities and the public are truly heard in health research? - what happens when patient priorities are different to academic/policy priorities? I'm acutely aware that one of the key issues in this space is that there are many people who are not invited to the table to be involved. As panel members, we bring a diverse range of views and perspectives, as people with lived experience of health conditions and people with professional experience of patient engagement, policy and research. However, I want to acknowledge that we are 5 voices, in the privileged position of being invited to the table. What we can do is use our voices to advocate for others. ARPA-H Director Dr. Renee Wegrzyn launched the groundbreaking 100M Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) #SprintForWomensHealth alongside First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and the Gender Policy Council. This sprint marks a significant step forward in advancing the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, aimed at tackling pressing challenges in women’s health. With a commitment to leveraging $100 million in public funding, the Sprint for Women’s Health is set to boost research and development in this continually underfunded space.    Dr. Wegrzyn emphasizes, “as a woman, and as the Inaugural Director of ARPA-H, I know first-hand that prioritizing health for the women of our nation that represent more than half of our population can wait no longer.”   But what exactly is ARPA-H and why was it started? At EFCNI, we regularly organise 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐬 that provide a platform for leaders and advocates to connect. These events allow participants to share experiences, discuss strategies, and learn from one another, facilitating successful translation projects. By bringing together healthcare societies, parent organisations, and other stakeholders, we can develop a 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 and work collaboratively to advocate for change.
