Not getting this vital distinction screws up a lot of careers… …and Daniel Priestley articulates this with more clarity than I’ve seen anywhere else in his book “Key Person of Influence”. Nowhere is this more true than investment banking. Tighter and tighter resourcing means less staffing on deals and less junior support for VPs and Directors. They tend to get stuck with a lot more “junior” tasks. That’s all what Daniel Priestley describes here as “functional”. But those that really make an impact, shine, and get recognition are those bankers that become “vital”. It’s the kind a person you want to have on your deal team - not because they churn through tons of work, but because they bring a unique energy and perspective. They move others into the right direction. They lift everyone’s ability to perform at their best. They come up with an innovative structure that gets the deal over the line. And, it’s a choice. “The choice is yours from this moment forward; you can choose how you want to show up”. No doubt, if you’re a VP/D, there’s a fair bit of getting stuff done required, but I challenge you to look around and you’ll see peers operating from a place of vitality not functionality.
